    Fri 26 Sep – Ratatat, Panther, E*Rock
E*Rock was alright. Panther was stupid. But oh my god Ratatat.

That shit was incredible. Everything sounded amazing, the crowd was great, and they closed with a double encore ending with "Seventeen Years." Also, the extended accelerando bongo drum solo at the end of "Mi Viejo" was amazing.

I know the tickets were going for somewhere around ~$200 on CraigsList, but as far as I'm concerned, the people who decided to pay that probably walked away satisfied. Maybe the best concert I've been to in my life so far.
  • My favorite descriptions of some of my favorite artists.

    Set 21 2008, 10:15

    Chronic Future:
"This is the kind of music I imagine the world's raddest 11-year-olds listen to." -kaiveran

"OCDJ is Dan Gaeta making sounds on laptop, guitar, kalimba, euphonium, and more things like that. It sounds kind of like climbing to the top of a power line tower to watch the storm clouds build at dusk. It can also sound like drinking the concentrated hi-c syrup meant to be diluted in the soda fountain but you don’t have time for that you need it now. He frequently tours with the likes of Dan Deacon and the Video Hippos and is known for his amazing live shows that can change your life." -Dsoff87

    Girl Talk:
"Girl Talk's trademark sound consists of quick, glitchy samples of current Top 40 hits, 90's alternative, 80's pop, and classic rock, blended together to produce pure ear candy." -Girl Talk facebook page

    "O, Silvester!
What a magical night thou wert!
    Girl Talk hath crunketh thee,
and thou shalt never be the same!" -RainboVideo

    Shiina Ringo:
"As I said last time, I understand the prejudices. I don't give a damn. Her name should be everywhere. It's been a long time since I've heard anything as exciting as Shiina's 2003 album Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana. I'm furious that it took four years and a random recommendation to get this into my headphones. I can't wait for everyone else to be get as excited and angry as I am."

"Now: Imagine a world where Kelly Clarkson became an inventive-but-still-popular musician, a world where she took a release called Jism! Jism! Jism! triple-platinum." -music blogger HeartOnAStick

    We Are Scientists:
"Generating rock music of the thoughtful, sometimes epic, often loud, vaguely danceable, implicitly humanist variety." -official website

"Their name was inspired by an awkward conversation with a U-Haul employee who was inspecting a van that the band had rented. The U-haul employee, attempting to make polite conversation, asked the three bespectacled band members if they were brothers. They said no. He asked if they were scientists. They told him that they were musicians, not scientists. To this day, they regret telling the truth. But the band has denied this and admitted they are in actual fact named after the Cap’n Jazz song which bears the name." - last.fm artist description
  • "50 Questions about my Top 50"

    Ago 13 2008, 11:57

I'm going to use my Top 50 for the last 12 months instead of overall because my shitty tags for old music kind of fuck it up.

1.How did you get into 29? (Cake)
screenagerJ played me a few of their songs while riding bus 184 back in middle school, haha.

    2. What's the first song you ever heard by 22? (Yelle)

Ce Jeu, the first track on Pop Up. TY, CB.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33? (Franz Ferdinand)

    The Dark of the Matinée
I time every journey to bump into you, accidentally
I charm you and tell you of the boys I hate
    All the girls I hate
    All the words I hate
    All the clothes I hate
How I'll never be anything I hate

You smile, mention something that you like
How you'd have a happy life if you did the things you like

    4. How did you get into 49? (The Servant)
I heard the instrumental of Cells in the trailer for Sin City and was hooked. This band is a really good summary of what I listened to in 2005. Jack aided and abetted this obsession.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (The Pipettes)

Physically? Zero. Digitally? One. Legitimately? Zero.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50? (Lil' Wayne)

Up until 12 hours ago, it was A Milli, but yesterday afternoon, I discovered the Cannons remix he did with Lupe Fiasco and Freeway. They all do an incredible job on that track.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? (Jun Ishikawa, Hirokazu Ando)

On the Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards soundtrack? FUCK NO.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15? (椎名林檎)

No idea. Anything off Heisei Fuuzoku is art.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (Ratatat)

Currently, Mirando is my favorite off LP3, but including Ratatat and Classics, that award might go to Kennedy, which I used to wake me up for school every day for months.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (近藤浩治)

Anything from the Mario Galaxy soundtrack is incredibly uplifting, especially Battle Rock Galaxy and Choose a planet.

    11. What is the worst song by 40? (Neutral Milk Hotel)

Easily King Of Carrot Flowers Part 2 & 3. It's the only track I skip every time I listen to In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (坂本龍一)

Definitely Bibo no Aozora/04. Probably the saddest instrumental song ever written.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? (Scatman John)

Driving home from Kernersville with Porter and Sam listening to the ENTIRE SCATMAN JOHN ALBUM from start to finish trying to get inside his head.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38? (We Are Scientists)

Probably Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt or The Great Escape.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (The Thermals)

A Pillar Of Salt, because both the song and video are super upbeat.

    16. Is there a song by 25 that makes you sad? (Harry Gregson-Williams, Starsailor)

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (zoomzip)

zoomzip vs da gold (where it at). funny as hell.

    18. What's your favorite lyric by 11? (The Bird and the Bee)

    The Races
    you work so hard

just to light a little fire
just to make things happen for a reason
    just to get so tired
    just to feel every
    itty bitty goddamned
    bone in your body

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1? (Studio Pixel)

Daisuke Amaya, bless his lonely and immensely talented soul.

    20. Is there a song by 14 that makes you happy? (The Spinto Band)

Direct to Helmet is impossible to not be charmed by.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? (Chronic Future)

Being young and listening to them on repeat on my gigantic Creative Zen Ultra while playing some Twisted Metal game on the PSP. Also: being highly impressed by the opening verse of Stop Pretending. Finally, hearing Say Goodbye for the first time and finding it extremely relatable.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16? (Linkin Park)

    Hard. Faint?

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? (Honeycut)

Aluminum City. I heard it in some Flash game and loved it.

    24. What is your favorite album by 18? (The Ting Tings)

Their only album, We Started Nothing.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21? (Flobots)

Handlebars, which everyone loves. And which for the longest time I thought was their only good track. I now appreciate that Anne Braden is objectively a pretty good overtly political rap song, and I probably find it enjoyable because instead of being preachy, it's historical.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (日比野則彦)

    eye dee kay.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3? (Tae K)

Soulmates. My favorite mashup album of all time~

    28. What is you favorite song by 2? (M.I.A.)

    Paper Planes(duh) or Galang.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? (Kazuma Jinnouchi)

Bottle Rocket, and it always has been!

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Nullsleep)

None. Ask me again in December. :O

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? (Hirokazu Ando, Shogo Sakai, Tadashi Ikegami, Jun Ishikawa)

The Kirby Air Ride soundtrack is pure happiness no matter what song you pick.

    33. How did you get into 12? (東京事変)

jedibamf. As far as how she discovered SR/TJ, I have no idea.

    34. What is the worst song by 45? (Beck)

I don't listen to him enough to know. Does he have any songs about being a scientologist?

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (Mark Miller, Tommy Tallarico)

New Junk City, at Miranda's house, at like age 9, haha.

    36. What was the first song you ever heard by 48? (Belle and Sebastian)

Can't say for sure. Probably Like Dylan in the Movies via Caitlin.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live? (Polka-Tron)

None, but only because they don't exist and have just one song.

    38. What is you favorite song by 36? (Fabian Del Priore)

Anything he did for the Mission in Snowdriftland soundtrack. Which is appropriate to mention, because answering this survey looking for the correctly numbered artist in my charts feels a lot like an advent calendar.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? (SEGA Sound Team)

Hahahah. Green Hill Zone, Act 1. I was about twelve months old.

    40. What is you favorite album by 7? (Kanye West)

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy? (Brendan Small)

    Sunset Theme.

    43. What is your favorite song by 43? (The Rakes)

    Binary Love or The Guilt.

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46? (Tullycraft)

Discovering them this week and spending an hour just listening to Disenchanted Hearts Unite and reading along with the lyrics and loving every one.

    45. What is your favorite song by 35? (Takahiro Izutani)

None! I wish my charts weren't peppered with random videogame music composers :(

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy? (Fort Minor)

I love Fort Minor, but they are more or less the antithesis of happy music.

    47. What is your favorite album by 4? (Lupe Fiasco)

Answering this question would just feel dishonest. Food & Liquor and The Cool are equally perfect in my mind, and I just started listening to Mohammad Walks today which is so far equally impressive. I wrote a shitload about his non-mixtape albums in this article for suite101.

    48. Who is your favorite member of 37? (Eli Porter)

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 24? (Modest Mouse)
