Happy Birthday, Beck!

He'll like this amateur video for Gamma Ray. I know he will, he's a water sign like me. The video uses old film footage (1920s?) of a dancing girl in a flowing silk dress with batons sewn in on either side so she can swirl the fabric as she dances. Mesmerising.

Last.fm

The same can be said for Beck's brilliant new album, released yesterday. (A birthday present to himself?) Produced with Danger Mouse, Modern Guilt's genius lies in its subtlety. It's less dark than Sea Change but as introspective. Minimal, experimental but not in an obvious way, it's so polished, using now classic ideas such as 60s psychedelia, the certain something that makes this album shine could easily be overlooked. And quite clearly is going by some fan reviews.

I'm so tempted to post his horoscope for today from Jonathan Cainer. Oh I can't help myself, here it is:

Cancer

Set out with any destination in mind and you can soon find a reason to go somewhere else instead. Do anything, attempt anything, organise anything and you will rapidly come across someone who wants to criticise or question it! Yet you have to do something and you also have to honour the part of you that is not willing just to drift. So, either be bold and expect matters to grow complicated; or become meek, simple and somewhat less than satisfied. Why are you so nervous about doing the right thing?

Why stop there. Here's the new website for Modern Guilt - http://www.modernguilt.com/. Some strange goings on in here, especially on the Info page. Seems to be about the process of putting the album together. I like the idea of a the stalker rainbow.

Info:
out of all the appropriate situations to find oneself, the least being the hurtling of loose bricks, the parties involved first disclosed their coordinates and proffered cards which happened to be in their pockets. from an embassy of restraint and a superimposed background they assembled at the time of next convenience and weighed their options. drag a filing cabinet across a subdivision or sit out the current situation till a more reliable picture of the situation materialized. neither seemed all that enticing, so the course was set, the workstation laminated and some biofeedback sorted out for use in further research. after the frequency which would shatter a display case was discovered they launched themselves at a barricade of empty cardboard boxes. all these games were inconsequential at first but then later provided some back story for the urge to be a human battering ram. while so many people with disposable incomes sauntered by on the boulevard near the workstation a new kind of light was grafted onto the premises. "how many songs can we fit in an inflatable raft?" "I didn't know there was going to be a flood?" "There isn't, but that rainbow is stalking me somehow..." and so, 120 nights of no sleep and seeing the dawn try not make an impression, there was some hollow hewn thing there that seemed a little basic. "do you have anywhere to put this?" "just leave it where it is." I shook hands with danger mouse and said I'd see him again, maybe at the farmhouse or some scenic location where we could breathe a little.

Hmmm.

I somehow missed the Modern Guilt website, but having read the excerpt above, I will most certainly be checking it out. I kinda get it -- it really sounds like what I imagine the recording of this album felt like. Also, did you know that Ringo Starr shares a birthday with Beck? They were born 30 years apart. Something to ponder...

Oh I didn't know it was Ringo's birthday too. Nice one. It'll be interesting to see how Beck develops the Modern Guilt website as time goes on. One to keep any eye on for sure. Thanks for the comment, zeppyfish. :)

Beck and I share the 7/8 birthday, too. But even if we didn't, I'd still love the new album. Nice job on the vid, btw, and belated Happy Birthday to you! :)

I haven't enjoyed a Beck album this much since Sea Change. Still.... brilliant?? Masterpiece?? I find "Modern Guilt" to be a quick, entertaining listen that ultimately feels forgettable.

That's exactly how I felt. I love Sea Change. I thought about that when I listened to Modern Guilt and felt I had to mark it down. Sea Change is better, because I think it's got more emotion in it, more character. Modern Guilt is more like The Information. But I'm splitting hairs. I love Beck. Thanks for the comment, DemonSweat. :)
