1) Coheed and Cambria - I do love them. If I didn't, they wouldn't be my number 1 artist. One thing that I love about them is the fact that their music is not superficial, there is a complex and deep story behind every song, indeed their whole career. I don't understand the story. And so it makes it hard for me sometimes to understand exactly what it is Claudio means. I want to understand what that beautiful voice is so passionate about, but I just can't get my head around it all. Oh, and at their Melbourne concert, over-indulgence much? The drum solo was 10 minutes long! I was in awe for the first 3 minutes, the next 4 I spent dying for the others to come back out, the last 3 I was just ready to snap those damn drum sticks! lol
2) Tommy Lee - Ugh! The song Good Times! How can he be connected to Motley Crue, and yet release crap like that?
3) Thirsty Merc - I am extremely proud of Australian music, especially Australian rock. However, I think a lot more thought could be put into some of the lyrics, they seem to lack some kind of oomph! Sometimes it just sounds like Rai is singing a conversation, sometimes there is just no ring to it. Sounds to me like the good basis of a song, but the lyrics need to be tweaked to find the appropriate words. I know they represent the typical true-blue Aussie underdog, and their target audience are typical working-class blokes and shiela's, but sometimes I think I could write better lyrics! Also, sometimes I have to listen to the songs for a little while before I can figure out what it is, many of them sound very similar. Having said that, I think they are brilliant!
4) N*E*R*D - How can I like this band when I hate their genre? And yet I do. They make some great music like Bobby James, and then songs like Lap Dance. It's like they are two different bands.
5) J-Kwon - Ewww. I hate this guy. The only reason he is here is because I am a huge Joel Madden fan (yes I realise Good Charlotte aren't in my top artists, but thats because I don't listen to them on my computer), and so I just listen to their one song together, but he comes up as the artist.
6) Fall Out Boy - One thing that annoys me about one of my closest friends is that she will disown a band as soon as they become popular. I think that if you like a band, you like them, it shouldn't matter how many or how few people listen to them. Having said that, I think one of the most true lyrics ever written was Patrick Stump's "Bandwagon's full. Please, catch another" (This Ain't a Scene, It's An Arms Race). Circa Take This To Your Grave, I thought this band was truly amazing, and I didn't understand how so few people knew and loved them. Now every man and his dog love at least one song by them. And usually that song is from their latest album. It's gotten to the point where I can't wear my beloved FOB top because I feel like a poser. I think what I'm trying to say is they have become a trend. It's not about the music anymore. Every song they used to make was Golden (:P), now you have to look for those gems, it seems to be about money these days.
7) The Academy Is... - The single's from their latest album kinda annoy me. Other than that, no complaint's here so far.
8) Mark Ronson - I don't mind the odd cover, but I can't stand it when a career is based on covers. I listen to him though, because I think he puts an interesting spin on these covers. I just can't listen to him all the time, I need some originality, something I haven't heard before.
9) 1 Giant Leap - They're just a little bit too worldly for me to listen to too much. I can appreciate that they are revolutionary artists, but I can only handle them in small doses, before the politics of it all depresses me.
10) Cobra Starship - I feel like they having something to say, but they're too afraid to say it because their tween market would stop listening and record sales would drop. I think they're good fun, but that they are holding back. Also, Vicky-T just annoys me. I don't know, there's just something about her that makes me think they would do well to replace her.
11) Dolly Parton - While I would normally rather swallow live cockroaches than listen to country music, I have a fondness for Dolly. I love that she, unlike most other celebrities, doesn't try to hide the fact that her body has very few original parts, in fact she embraces it with humour. Having said that, sometimes the country twang is just too much for me to handle, as is the cutsie pie-ness of some of her songs. I love ones like Jolene, and To Daddy, that have great meaning to me, whereas ones like Tennessee Mountain Home make me want to reach for a bucket.
12) Hilltop Hoods - Again, their lyrics aren't very good. Pretty much all their songs sound the same. They have a few that I love to crank up, such as What a Great Night (essential listening for my best friend and I when we have a party night), but ones like Clown Prince make me ashamed that I grew up just kilometres away from them. I would just like to believe that Adelaide boys would have more respect for women, and spoke more about real issues, like they do in Stopping All Stations. Hey, I would love them even if they only rapped about drinking and being an Aussie, just don't speak about women that way, okay? Also, I would have a bit more respect for them if they actually played instruments, not just DJ'ed.
13) Motion City Soundtrack - It just seems to me that as their career progresses, their music gets more and more simple. Please, give me some more substance! Having said that, This is For Real is so so cool.
14) Cute Is What We Aim For - If all they want to be is cute, then they have succeeded, but I think they should have higher goals in mind. Their name took a while for me to get used to, but this is supposed to be about the music. The music is good. They have some real gem lyrics, and their music does have some real meaning, but they seem a bit fake when delivering the music. I feel, like Cobra Starship, they are being held back, and that with talent like theirs, they could be so much more.
15) Gym Class Heroes - I like this band, and Clothes Off!! is my favourite song of all time. Because I don't listen to hip-hop, I don't have much to compare them to, but I think they are try-hards. They're sound like their trying very hard to be classified as true-grit hip-hop, but don't try to be something you're not. They're great as they are, but its just confusing when they aren't getting their message across.
16) The Hush Sound - I only know a few of their songs, and that's because I can't handle them in large doses. There is just something lacking, they kinda bore me.
17) Plain White T's - I hate the fact that they got their big break with Hey There Delilah. It's only Tom, not the whole band, and I was listening to that song about 18 months before the mainstream world caught on! It has just been so overplayed that it is losing any meaning it had.
18) The Starting Line - They're so young! Almost too young to make such meaningful music! But I really have very few complaints here.
19) Peaches - I don't normally listen to her at all. I only listen to Fuck the Pain Away because I have fond memories attached to it. She annoys me. Oh! Look at me! I'm promiscuous and swear and make dance music about sex! How much of a hardcore rebel am I?! Am I rocking your boat? Get over it darling, you weren't the first and you won't be the last.
20) All Time Low - Only very recently discovered them. They have some very very mediocre songs, and they also have a couple of fun ones too. I don't give them much thought, their music hasn't had much of an impact on me, there doesn't seem to be much deep meaning behind the music, and they aren't saying anything that hasn't been said before by many other similar bands. I don't know, maybe I'm just listening to the wrong songs?
21) Timbaland - He dominates the charts, it's driving me crazy! Let someone else have a turn! And his attitude annoys me, like he truly thinks he's top shit! I only listen to him because I respect the way he combnes genres and plays with artists that aren't expected, such as She Wants Revenge and Fall Out Boy.
22) Blink-182 - They were my first rock show. And I've never been more dissapointed in a band. They were clearly drunk, and were highly offensive. Not their usual funny offensive jokes, but they ridiculed our city, and cut their show short by about 40 minutes. I was crushed.
23) *NSync - I'm embarressed to admit I still love them. They are the soundtrack to my childhood. Ok, its all just pop shit, and they aren't real musicians, but even kids need something to listen to. At least they weren't as sleazy as some of the bands kids have these days.
24) Britney Spears - She's just a trainwreck. Her showmom pushed her too far I think, living through her, when really she is just trailer trash, who happened to get lucky. It's just sad that Kevin Federline has turned out to be the lesser of two evils when it comes to parenting their children.
25) Boys Like Girls - Anyone who knows me can tell you I'm a pop-punk tart, I love the shit, can't get enough of it. They are no exception. They could have more substance, but what the hell? lol
Ok that took me over an hour. It's late at night. Now I'm tired and grumpy, that was hard to do! lol
Don't get offended by anything I've said. We all have different opinions. I will respect yours if you will respect mine. Keep in mind, that I must like these bands, otherwise they wouldn't be my top artists.
