Today in the United States, it is a Federal Holiday in celebrating, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday.

There was a lot of lobbying done in order to make the holiday be recognized. A year after Dr. King's death in 1969, the paper work and lobbying started and it was not until President Regan decided to sign Dr. King's birthday over as a National Holiday. Some states did not recognize the King Holiday in the beginning. A lot of tension was still in America then about the holiday (and still is) but not as much now.

Please check out this video in celebration of Dr. King's birthday.

I must have been about 11 when this video came out. I still know all the words. Everyone was so happy and elated that Dr. King would be celebrated at a National level. [I wish the song was still available. I have a 45 of the song somewhere in my junk at my parents house.]

Sad thing today is that STILL many people DO NOT KNOW THEIR HISTORY. So, if you are curious, go to your library and research what you want to know. People like myself are willing to share!

**By the way with my parents, we marched at the South African embassy in Washington, DC [my hometown] in protest against apartheid in South Africa in the 1980s. It was a tense time. Fortunately, we were not arrested but we were out there in our marching shoes! No, we did not get arrested but we knew plenty of people who did! I was about 11 or 12 at the time.

The song, Sun City, was the catalyst for the King Holiday song to come about. The name of the group that recorded that song was Artists United Against Apartheid. Sun City song was in protest of Apartheid in South Africa.

Facts on the song/people involved:

I had these songs on tape/record and they are in storage. So, I do not have them on me now.
Thank GOD for Youtube!

That's the only good thing Reagan ever did for Black folks.

I have a MOG account and a comedian named David Spates decided to post a video of what Dr. King's Legacy meant to him. I was pretty much annoyed because he just saw Dr. King's legacy as sleeping in and not being productive. Here is the post with his comment as @davidspates. http://mog.com/2Serenity/blog_post/138815 Here was my comment to him: @davidspates - lord have mercy. I cannot believe you did that. However, I hope in reality you know the REAL meaning behind DR. King's birthday. A lot of HELL went down to bring his day and it is supposed to be a day of service and not one of sleeping in. However, I grew up always celebrating and doing something to honor Dr. King not only on his birthday but everyday. This kind of put a bad taste in my mouth when a white radio DJ in DC said it would be best to kill other black leaders so we could have an entire week off to just do nothing. Sorry, but that is not what Dr. King was about. It was the Greaseman in DC who said this: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/greaseman-faq/ Though you can have your humor times, please do not make a mockery of Dr. King's birthday. So many sacrificed for you to have the life you have now to even make the video. Since you are extremely creative and resourceful, have you thought of actually using your skills to teach something of positivity about your rich history?! Think about it the next time you want to sleep in on a holiday to honor a man who was for tolerance and activism on all levels.

So, David apologized but he said he still would have made the video. He failed to realize the real truth of his ignorance. I swear some people make me wonder!
