The Unforgiving is symphonic. Listen to the instrumentals.

@nDroae, the thought crossed my mind as well :D

To be honest, I don't think the songs on The Unforgiving NEED to have more symphonic elements than they already do. Those songs just work that way. I think people have this weird conception that there is a genre with specific elements and musicians must write their songs in a certain way in order to squeeze them into it. It's more like the other way 'round, they write songs and, depending on what they sound like, a certain genre can be applied to them. Besides, when WT had growls they were far from the whole symphonic gig and totally into the doom metal sound. :0

vvv I mean by how they barely have any symphonic metal elements in The Unforgiving. Most of the songs sound just like boring, radio rock to me. XP WT is at there best when they can incorporate symphonic elements into their own sound. vv Yes, Hydra is pretty good considering that they tried not to make all the songs sound exactly the same.

@HeartOfAWolf, get why I (and many) think The Unforgiving it's amazing. Sorry, I didn't mean it as insulting, or in a point finger kind of way. I just meant you're simply not into that sound. It might not be the right moment, or just not your cup of tea, that's it. For instance, I don't think I could have appreciated the kind of acoustic guitar-oriented pop in Brooke Fraser's earlier works a few months ago. It just wasen't in my chords. :)

Okay, but I don't understand why so many fans praise The Unforgiving. It's pretty unlistenable just like Sonata Arctica's latest album.

Actually Enter it's my favourite along with The Unforgiving, and I love The Dance too; but while I appreciated that couple of nods to the past in Silver Moonlight and Tell Me Why, I appreciate more the fact they're constantly going forward. :)

I put TSF in my CD tray and iTunes asks whether it's TSF or THoE. HOW CAN YOU NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE So apparently they're too similar for Gracenotes CDDB to tell apart

Personally, the only albums I really love start to finish are The Unforgiving and Enter. All the others have at least some songs that I'd rather skip. Hydra is probably my third favourite by percentage of songs I like. As for the others, Mother Earth has both songs I really, really love and really, really dislike (looking at you, Deceiver of Fools and In Perfect Harmony). THOE has some songs I like, some I don't, both to a lesser extent than Mother Earth; but perhaps I just listened to it too much because upon its release my iPod broke down, I had to switch back to cd player, and had two hour bus rides three times a week for months during which I really overlistened to it. Then TSF… meh, it's okay, but it pales by comparison with the others. And ALL its best songs are bonus tracks or single b-sides, which is humorless and comical at once.

I'm not sure why so many people think WT turned pop or sold out with the latest albums. If "turned pop" means that they're less metal and more catchy now, let me remind you that they were never THAT metal to begin with and they've always been catchy and kinda poppy. Regarding the classic albums (excluding the 1st one, which I haven't heard yet), Sharon's vocals were generally soft and the guitars in ME & TSF were low in the mix. It wasn't until THOE that the guitars had a bigger role and Sharon's vocals were more powerful and rock-ish (and still are). Hydra is a mediocre album but THOE and TU are amazing albums, especially the latter which is great from start to finish. IMO, they're now more rock/metal than they were in ME & TSF which are considered classic albums. They've changed a lot, but they definitely haven't turned pop. Just my 2 cents. I know many people will disagree with me, but now that I got this off my chest, I feel better :P *abandons thread*

Смотрел новый концерт Hydra на blue ray. Классно, хоть и не дотягивает до Black Symphony. Все таки новые песни. Да и вокал у нее уже не тот. Хотя, лучше бы я ошибался... В марте поеду на концерт))))

Unforgiving is one of the few albums I tend to listen through as a whole rather than trackwise and at random. In Hydra I can hardly find a single good song. [2] I love WT but I can't hear a entire album everytime like I can do in The Unforgiving or The Heart of Everything, even that The Silent Force is my fave.
