How much of a loser does it make me that I've actually been looking forward to being able to do this for a couple weeks now? Clearly, I have no life.

If, understandably, you choose to skip over this nonsense (sorry if you followed this link from some artist or track page thinking it would be something substantial), I'm currently partway through counting down my top twenty albums of the year here with download links and overly-wordy reviews and junk.

And now, as per usual, my fifty most played artists. With play counts and position changes from last year. Bolded were not within last year's top fifty. Underlined are artists I hadn't properly listened to before this year.

    1. Deas Vail (731 plays)
    2. Grizzly Bear (622 plays)
    3. Wye Oak (592 plays)
    4. Laura Marling (569 plays) DOWN 2
    5. Bombay Bicycle Club (502 plays)
    6. Eisley (434 plays)
    7. The Antlers (415 plays) UP 11
    8. Sarah Slean (401 plays) UP 42
    9. Bright Eyes (384 plays) UP 31
    10. Fleet Foxes (379 plays)
    11. The Rosebuds (375 plays)

I've had a last.fm profile for 5 years and have yet to write a single journal entry, so here's one of these survey things I stole from somebody.

Name your top 10 most played bands on Last.fm.
I've taken my most played bands for the past year to make it more ... relevent. (normalised for track lengths)

    1.Warpaint
    2.Current 93
    3.40 Watt Sun
    4.Mogwai
    5.Aidan Baker
    6.Nadja
    7.Alcest
    8.Rome
    9.Agalloch
    10.Fever Ray

Now answer the questions according to the numbers:

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
Hmm, that's tough. What stands out to me is "The Bungled and the Botched" - it was certainly the first track that caught my attention..

What is your favourite album of 2?
Oh god, so many Current 93 albums to choose from.. Of Ruine Or Some Blazing Starre possibly? Soft Black Stars and Sleep Has His House are fantastic too, though...

What is your favourite lyric that 5 has sung?
  • My Top 50 Albums of 2010

    Gen 16 2011, 3:57 di kcwyckoff

So this year I decided to get even more self-indulgent and make a list of my fifty favorite albums from 2010. Here they are...

    #50 Nest - Retold (Norway)
    http://img.amazon.ca/images/I/51Bd9G6KMFL._SL500_AA135_.jpg
    Highlights: Kyoto, Marefjellet
My favorite ambient album of the year. Lots of ominous but incredibly beautiful strings and piano. Great to study to. I don’ know a thing about the band.

#49 Holy Fuck - Latin (Toronto)
    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41V6wqjtw-L._SL500_AA135_.jpg
    Highlights: Red Lights, Stay Lit
My favorite all analog electronic band returns better than ever. Driving acoustic drums and lots of cool old-school synths.

#48 Black Mountain – Wilderness Heart (Vancouver)
    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51vTZIKKgdL._SL500_AA135_.jpg
Highlights: The Hair Song, Old Fangs
The psych-rockers add a little light to their dark sound. The male/female vocals play off each other perfectly on The Hair Song. Not to mention its got one of the best album covers I’ve seen.

    The Best Albums of 2010
    plus honorable mentions and let-downs
2010 was an amazing year of music, in my opinion. I had to listen/re-listen to a lot of albums to get a comprehensive and true-to-my-thoughts list compiled. The album descriptions and reviews are written in a simple style, due to the fact that I get really pissed when I read music reviews that give me extremely obscure information, imply knowledge of at least 6 other unrelated albums, and use adjectives that normal humans would never use to describe anything. On top of that, those kinds of reviews usually don’t even give me a good idea of what the album sounds like, and I would probably spend less time listening to the album than trying to figure out what each sentence means.
Anyway, after hours and hours of work, I present to you my year-end music list!

Let's be honest here, 2011 has had a really terrible start. From animals dying mysteriously all over the place to a politician getting shot over the weekend. What the hell 2011?! Why won't you let us recover mentally from beating ourselves up about all those unresolved resolutions we made in 2009 and completely forgot about until it was November 2010? It's like we are moving in slow motion through a montage of an end-of-humanity disaster movie. We still have 710 days to go for that, so let's relax for a moment here and talk about something incredibly mundane like my music stats.

Ever since I joined last.fm, I've kept an end of the year journal highlighting my most played music. I thought about combining everything in one single entry, from albums, songs, EPs and concerts to 2009's lost albums, but it seemed too long. So, this is a look back at the full albums, to start things off.

Looking back at 2010 I will say that it was a very pop oriented year for my ears. …

Honestly speaking, 2010 didn't musically excite me like 2009 did. It's funny how the true value of something arises when a comparison is being made. I described 2009 as a 'good' year. How wrong was I. During this year I realized that I had been spoiled with lots of great songs, even legendary ones - Growing Old Is Getting Old as one of the best songs ever! 'Great' would have been a more proper description and that's just the tag 2009 has from now on.
Does this mean that 2010 is that bad? Certainly not. If you check my profile, you'll see that from my Top Artist about 10 high-listed ones released an album this year. Well, did they deliver? Interpol, The Walkmen and CocoRosie all released solid albums, but they don't appeal to me that much. Guess I'm being spoiled and suffering from unreasonable high expectations concerning my Top Artists. But fortunately, some of my Top Artists managed to create some great songs, as a result of which I think 2010 has been a 'good' year - and perhaps even a 'great' year…
