Don't understand the hate for Tycho's new album. I think it sounds quite good to be honest.

Awake is fun for what it is. You can't expect a lot from chillwave in 2014.

Awake sounds like cookie-cutter muzak sometimes. I can basically enjoy it, but it's seriously lacking in any creative impulses. [2]

Dropping in to say that they were just incredible live. Very heavy on the new album but like the poster below says (we were at the same show in Cambridge MA) the live instrumentation suits the new compositions very well. What a show. Glorious.

Saw them in Cambridge last night, I still am not backing the new songs as much as Dive but the recordings really don't do them justice (the drums especially). They really killed it.

Not sure if it's because it's the first Tycho album that I heard but I think that he will never top Past is prologue. Dive was ok but a bit forgettable and Awake is in my opinion better than Dive and closer to Past is prologue but like some people already said - it's pretty same old same old. At times I was asking myself "wait am I really listening to the new album, I swear this song is from some of his previous releases". Anyway, he makes good relaxing music.

I was really digging this music in the back of my mind drifting off in a nice understated way and then my friend told me it sounded like the music from the SkyTV menu and I can't take it seriously any more.

you noticed how tycho is relentless in his quest to make more car-advert friendly music than moby who's 'top dog' in that field? it's his life man

Never felt a kick like when I heard Dive for the first time (Diiiiiiiiive!), but it's a solid record which is ideal for spring and summer time. Thanks Tycho!

Past is prologue is still the best one for me... The last one is nice, but that's it.... I will listen to it a few weeks and forget it. I find it short too. But it won't prevent me to rush on any piece of music Tycho will produce in the future !

Saw Awake in the store today, and the cover made me buy it blind. Perfect background music pretty much sums it up which isn't bad at all.

"I think some people are seduced by his graphic design talents, packaging and production, they heap too much praise on him because everything is so brilliantly presented." [2] This album isn't really groundbreaking in any way, same sound as the last one and it gets dull after a while.

I like the new album. It's not as outstanding as Dive was, but it's a beautiful background noise - and that's a good thing in this case.

I think some people are seduced by his graphic design talents, packaging and production, they heap too much praise on him because everything is so brilliantly presented. Talented designer, talented producer, not so talented musician IMO. I have the same issue with Com Truise too. They both need to work on the musicality and rhythms instead of focusing on nerdy synth sounds, glossy production and pretty album cover graphics. It reminds me of gaming when you have a shooter with amazing graphics but the thing is on rails, dull and predictable. Don't hate, just saying.

Yes, Awake demands to be played while driving with all the windows open/top down, volume cranked comfortably high, enjoying the beginnings of a warm spring. I got my disc in the mail today, (thanks for showing the preoder-ers some love, Tycho!), and it's definitely helping me cope with this last vestige of winter. Dive took a few listens for things to click with me, and I don't think Awake is any different. In fact, he may have more infinitely-repeatable tracks on there than Dive--Ascension/Adrift are difficult to listen to more than a dozen or so times, whereas Coastal Brake will forever be perfect. So by trimming out the dull tracks, maybe he'll end up with more ear worms.

@ scomatsho: that's more or less how I feel about all of his work, not that that's necessarily a bad thing. The blended, immersed approach is definitely how I fancy my Tycho listens. For me, Montana is easily distinguishable and possibly my favorite song off the record, though a few others are really beginning to take shape and stand out from the rest. Either way, I'll agree that Awake is no Dive, but it's still a damn fine listen and will absolutely find its way onto my spring soundtrack for 2014.
