I found the LP of this soundtrack recently at a used book/record store in Santa Cruz, California. Saw Crystal Gayle singing with Willie Nelson on You Tube. She's really into old Hoagy Carmichael music, and did a CD somewhat recently covering some of his tunes. If there's a singer/songwriter who is his equal, it's Tom Waits. Crystal Gayle should do an album of Waits' covers, and it would kick ass on Scarlett Johanssen's attempt. Some suggestions: "Walk Away," "Dead and Lovely," "Broken Bicycles," "Take Me Home," "Once Upon a Town/Purple Avenue," "Wages of Love" , "Yesterday Is Here," "House Where Nobody Lives," "Way Down In The Hole," and "Down There By The Train" (with Waits doing a duet with her on this tune!).

I have this CD, and it's a favorite. Tom Waits heard Crystal Gayle singing Cry Me a River on his car radio, and since Bette Middler wasn't available to work on 'One From the Heart,' Crystal got the assignment. Wages of Love and Picking up After You are delivered with a jazzy verve by Gayle, while Waits uses his lounge act voice to put the listener into a Vegas mindset. I'd agree it is one of Waits most underrated albums, and surprisingly has a tune that many consider one of his best: Broken Bicycles. Regarding Crystal Gayle, she certainly has the talent, then and now, to do the C&W as well as old jazz covers and the blues. I like her voice and some of her work. With Waits, well, I never really got into much of his music from 'Swordfishtrombones' on, though there's a number of cuts off some of those experimental- sounding albums that I like. I have all his CDs, plus two LPs, from his 1973 to 1982 period. 'Nighthawks At The Diner' and 'Foreign Affairs' are two other favorites.

an unusual duo to be sure, but oddly it works well. I never could get into Crystal Gayle's solo stuff (my dad played her music all the time when I was kid) but she captures Tom's material well. I particularly like Broken Bicycles and Old Boyfriends.
