I have feeling that The Man In The High Castle would feel completely different after VALIS, I got to re-read it. I guess it's not ordinary alternative reality fiction, it is like creative revision of what Philipp K. Dick was actually experiencing. Not a matter of being insane or recovering but about looking at the world through the prism of mental condition or drugs or both in his case and finding new facets of reality to explore.

I enjoy that you can tell how far Philip K. Dick had fallen into the grips of mania or, conversely, was in the process of recovery by reading his forewords or dedications. I need to read some more biographical work on him and finish The Man In The High Castle already. I typically have multitudes of respect for any prolific author, especially science fiction writers that are relevant decades after they originally published their work. It's remarkable how well his books aged in comparison to many of his contemporaries.

I love how Philipp K. Dick had kind of expertise in every weird metaphisical thing he wrote about since he was genuinely insane from some point of view. He thougt he was Thomas Aquinas and everything existed in some universal time, so he was living a life of Thomas Aquinas and Philipp Dick at the same time. But he had enough sense to not get into mental hospital too often. After I've read Valis and some other autobiographical notes I have endless respect for him, I percieve him as sort of a shaman.

Murakami and PKD are good for very different reasons. As much as I like the latter, I find his prose difficult to decipher at times whereas Murakami is typically fairly straight-forward, although as much credit needs to be given to the translator as the author. Philip K. Dick slays all in regard to the originality of his ideas. His imagination was boundless (thanks drugs). Regardless, two records are in the mix, so there will definitely be an abundance of songs named after science fiction/fantasy books (I personally want a record of songs named after Dan Simmons and/or Joe Haldeman books).

Joeyxdc, thanks for the answer. And for music. Keep it up! Murakami is good, but Philip K. Dick is better, so good luck with dissuasion.

The first tape and the Bears split aren't named after books (things were still being felt out at that point), but the rest are. Also, the Gumilinski split is named after (excellent) Ursula K. Le Guin books and the eventually-to-be-released 4-way split is named after China Meiville books (which I haven't read yet). I think the next record is slated to be named after Philip K. Dick stories. James said something about naming the next LP after Murakami books again, but I'm not interested in changing the name to "Haruki Murakami" so I still need to dissuade him.

Are all of their songs named after books? I see Murakami, Stephenson, and Gibson.

Good point, I think "todos" usually means everyone. Regardless, this name is so sad and isn't all that really matters this Christmas? It's not about the presents.
