Following releases on Touch and Go (August) and Yep Roc Records (Wire Post To Wire, Albatross) and shows with the likes of Wire, Nine Inch Nails, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The National, The Shins, Stephen Malkmus, and Slint, The Standard signed to V2 Records (The White Stripes, Grandaddy) in 2007. They worked tirelessly throughout the year in Portland, OR to record their fifth full-length effort, “Swimmer”. The album was portended to be the release that would propel The Standard out from the underground where quietly, they had been making their own brand of uniquely inventive music since 1999.
In January 2007, V2 Records’ United States and Canada branches announced that they were “undergoing restructuring”. Simply put, the label was closing it’s doors and could not release any new albums.
The band explored new options for the release of “Swimmer”, and throughout the process of determining what the band’s next step would be, singer Tim Putnam encountered numerous other extraordinary artists that had similarly weathered the industry confines. Seeking to have full control over the fate of his own band’s releases and help other artists, Putnam resolved to form his own label, Partisan Records in late winter 2008.

amiestreet.com This website has their albums "Albatross" and "Wire Post To Wire" on it for like under $3 a piece. I personally love this band to death, I wish I could find more indie rock bands who sounded this good. It's funny though because everyone else I recommend them to dislikes them and yet I cannot understand what they see in bands like Neutral Milk Hotel or the Arcade Fire. Oh well different strokes for different folks I guess. I can't wait for a new album!

This and is remarkably underrated. Please check these guys out. Tense, melodic intricate, bold. Don' let th quirky vocals put you off. If you like Radiohead, The Dismemberment Plan, Divine Inspiration, The Sea And Cake, and/or Jeff Buckley listen. "Hotel" and "The Swimmer" are good starts but seek out "Red Drop" and especially "Metropolitan".

Yes, I also love August, probably my favourite. But I reckon their best album so far was "Wire Post To Wire". All the others sound the same, but "Wire Post To Wire" has something different about it... The Swimmer is OK, but it's definitely not The Standard at their best.

I just got 'Albatross' and I am very impressed. At first I thought of The National, but this is less anthemic and more textured and tense. I'm going to try and get a copy of 'Swimmer' now.
