Let's be honest here, 2011 has had a really terrible start. From animals dying mysteriously all over the place to a politician getting shot over the weekend. What the hell 2011?! Why won't you let us recover mentally from beating ourselves up about all those unresolved resolutions we made in 2009 and completely forgot about until it was November 2010? It's like we are moving in slow motion through a montage of an end-of-humanity disaster movie. We still have 710 days to go for that, so let's relax for a moment here and talk about something incredibly mundane like my music stats.

Ever since I joined last.fm, I've kept an end of the year journal highlighting my most played music. I thought about combining everything in one single entry, from albums, songs, EPs and concerts to 2009's lost albums, but it seemed too long. So, this is a look back at the full albums, to start things off.

Looking back at 2010 I will say that it was a very pop oriented year for my ears. …
  • Albums of The Year 2010

    Gen 9 2011, 17:28 di latenightbus

52 entries or 1 for every week (or perhaps I just couldn't shorten it to 50.)

    1. Magic Lantern- Platoon/Showstopper (Not Not Fun)
Without doubt the most fun I've had with an album this year. Magic Lantern achieved the nigh impossible and topped 2008's frankly staggering High Beams. This is exactly what psych rock should sound like, all motornik rhythm section and mind bending guitars with a smattering of organ for good measure. The real difference between the 2 albums was in the production, this one sounds like the band are in the room with you. A quasi religious experience on good headphones.

    2. Liars – Sisterworld (Mute)

Whilst Radiohead tease us about release dates, Liars have snuck on the inside and are ready to pounce on their title of best band around.. 'Sisterworld' went some way to proving that. An album that conjures many images of urban decay and deprivation, yet manages to finish on one of the most beautiful songs of the year in Too Much, Too Much.

    3. Women – Public Strain (Jagjaguwar)

    Witam w nowym rocku

Nowy rok przywitał nas masą świetnych utworów i jak zwykle mnóstwem dylematów, bo przepadł w poczekalni kapitalny, stoner rockowy Open Hand, nowy, piękny The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, powalająco udany Future Islands, taki sam jak zwykle R.E.M. czy arcy-fajnie-dziwny Matthew Dear. Ale co się odwlecze ... ; Bo tego tygodniowe nowości ... Co chwile było wielkie WOW!!

W ubiegłym tygodniu zadebiutowały świetny country rockowy The Decemberists, pokręcony w tym samym kierunku co Notwist, zespół Grasscut, nawiedzony do cna Y/Y, tradycjonaliści z Kings of Leon, kompletnie odlatujący w stronę disco powracający Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, majestatyczny School Of Seven Bells, czy You ! - trochę podobni do Young love.

  • Dandelion Radio - January 2011 shows

    Gen 1 2011, 11:33 di DandelionRadio

    Festive 50:
Continuing a Christmas tradition started by the late broadcaster John Peel in 1976, an assortment of our DJs count down through the best 50 tracks from 2010, as voted for by listeners to Dandelion Radio. Mark Cunliffe, Paul Ackroyd, Matt Gunn, Ste, Rocker, Mark Whitby, Pete Jackson, and Andy take it in turns to reveal the chart in reverse order, with Rachael Neiman announcing this year's winner!
To try to keep the suspense in the countdown, the track info is not shown until a few seconds before each song finishes. The show is repeated every day (at different times) until the end of January so if you join in somewhere in the middle, do come back and hear the rest.

    Andrew Morrison:
Andy's 3-hour January show features his favourite tracks and acts from the last twelve months, with another chance to hear some of the very best session recordings from his shows in 2010 – including Ghost Society, Errors, Cygnus X-1, Spiral Into The Storm, The Horn The Hunt, Block 45, SWATHES and Red Cosmos. …

Amusement Parks On Fire - Road Eyes

    Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
  • Mix of the Year - 2010

    Dic 29 2010, 14:12 di jurlacher

2010 was a pretty fantastic year for music – probably the best one I can remember since some time in the late 90s, and I'm betting those memories are pretty rose-tinted. Not only was there a huge volume of new and exciting music this past year, but a large quantity of it what I was looking forward to actually turned out to be great! Strangely (or perhaps predictably), in spite of all the new artists I shared through my Mixes of the Month(s), my "best of" is mostly made up of bands I was already fond of before the beginning of 2010. There's something to be said for familiarity, I suppose.

The year started with some very good (albeit mildly disappointing due to past excellence) releases from Shearwater, Frightened Rabbit, and Midlake, the middle of 2010 was full of great stuff courtesy of The National, Menomena, and John Grant, among others, and the past few months have seen excellent releases from The Phantom Band, Robyn, and Kanye West. …
