Mark Lanegan, membro degli Screaming Trees e dei Queens of the Stone Age, incontra Greg Dulli, membro degli Afghan Whigs e successivamente dei Twilight Singers, e insieme cominciano a scrivere canzoni durante il tempo libero. Spesso si incontrano durante le vacanze di Natale dove buttano le basi per questo progetto. Intanto Mark Lanegan collabora con Greg Dulli e i Twilight Singers dove canta in alcune canzoni (Number Nine e Live with Me).
Cominciano a fare tour insieme nel 2006 e nel 2007 (a cui partecipa anche il gruppo italiano Afterhours). Intanto il progetto Gutter Twins prende lentamente vita, il numero di canzoni aumenta e i “due” trovano anche la casa discografica. È la mitica Sub Pop di Seattle. L’annuncio del loro debutto arriva a settembre 2007. L’album Saturnalia è uscito il 4 marzo 2008. Sul loro spazio internet di myspace sono usciti i primi due pezzi, e hanno anche comunicato le date del loro tour americano ed europeo, che si svolgerà da febbraio ad aprile, toccando anche l’Italia, con una data il 24 aprile a Milano.
