I The Gathering, originari di Oss, Paesi Bassi, nascono nel 1989 come band doom metal; il loro sound si evolve gradualmente verso quello attuale, un rock alternativo dalle tinte psichedeliche.
La nascita del gruppo si deve ai fratelli Hans e René Rutten e a Bart Smits, a cui si uniscono successivamente Hugo Prinsen Geerligs, Jelmer Wiersma e Frank Boeijen. A distinguerli dalle altre band metal sono le tastiere, che all’epoca non erano molto comuni nel genere. Il primo disco, Always…, viene rilasciato nel 1992 dopo alcuni demo che li hanno portati ad aprire per band del calibro dei Samael e dei Death. L’abum si muove su ritmiche cadenzate e toni oscuri, e il cantato growl di Bart Smits è intervallato dalla voce femminile di Marike Groot. La critica della stampa è positiva, e molti concerti si susseguono, anche al di fuori dell’Olanda.
L’album successivo, Almost a Dance, vede un cambio di line-up dal punto di vista vocale: entrano Niels Duffhues e Martine van Loon a sostituire rispettivamente Bart e Marike, ma i risultati non sono dei migliori, e di nuovo nel gruppo si sente bisogno di rinnovamento. È così che con l’uscita di Mandylion giunge finalmente Anneke van Giersbergen, dalla voce pulita e dolce, più adatta alle atmosferere gotiche della band. Questo è il primo album prodotto sotto l’etichetta Century Media.
Sulle stesse sonorità di Mandylion esce Nighttime Birds, altro successo, che però porta all’abbandono del chitarrista Jelmer Wiersma.

Always is quite an underrated album, certainly not on the same level as what would follow but it's still one of the better death/doom albums from the early 90s. Far better than the mediocre Almost a Dance.
