The Thinnest Gruel Yet: Top Ten Songs at 2:10
Feb 2 2010, 6:04 di rockrobster23
(No, the title does not refer to the songs in the list below, it refers to my limp intro and weak song comments. I hope to return to the usual thick, gristly gruel next time.)
Too Much Consensus
Last time we talked about how the the fragmentation of contemporary audience has made critical consensus difficult. Not so fast, says the Village Voice's Chuck Eddy in his comments about this year's Pazz and Jop Poll. Look how closely our poll tracks with the Pitchfork list, says he. These new bands are horrible, and poll voters are both young and lazy, says he.
Ha ha ha! Laugh at the old man with me. Except...well, I almost agree with him. This is the first year I can remember that I've been almost uniformly unenthusiastic about the new music that most critics agree is great. From the short list of new critical darlings, The Antlers and Atlas Sound are the only ones (yet) that have gotten stuck in my regular rotation. Most everything else (Girls, Animal Collective, Phoenix, Dirty Projectors, etc. … -

What time is it? Time for a Guess That Song meme! Yay!
Giu 26 2008, 18:16 di GucciPiggy90
Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 25 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Bold out the songs when someone guesses both artist and track correctly.
Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

Brand New Cadillac - The Clash
Apr 28 2007, 5:14 di rfduck
I love the retro, surf-guitar feel of this song. Surf music may have been the original punk, when you really think about it. This is one of the heavier tracks, guitar-wise, on the London Calling album.
This is a great second track - it's full of energy and kicks things off right. There really isn't much more to say except: awesome song, great guitar, great use of swagger and attitude.

MusicIP mixer
Set 26 2006, 19:45 di longwayround
I downloaded the MusicIP mixer last week and, now that this aged G3 iMac has analysed most of my music library, I've decided to give it a whirl..
The idea is that I should pick one track and use that as a 'seed' for a mix. So, I have picked Belgium's 1986 Eurovision Song Contest winner J'aime la vie and told the software to create a one hour mix.
It's interesting and... strangely effective.
There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)

The Pixies track, in particular, came as rather a surprise but it fits well. -

Go Go 7188 - Dasoku Hokou (2000)
This is one fun album. It's a great combination of bouncy surf-rock energy and punk-rock snarl, all delivered in a happy sloppy style a little like PUFFY at their most rocking. The surf element of the music is probably a little overdone in most descriptions of the band. Most of the time, they're about as close to The Ventures or The Surfaris as Brand New Cadillac, which is to say you can hear a similarity, but you wouldn't call it the same thing. Good female vocals, killer riffs, solid arrangements - what more could you ask for? 12/15.
