Sparks is an American rock and pop music band formed in Los Angeles in 1970 by brothers Ron (keyboards) and Russell Mael (vocals), initially under the name Halfnelson. Best known for their quirky approach to song writing, Sparks’ music is often accompanied by cutting and acerbic lyrics, and an idiosyncratic stage presence, typified in the contrast between Russell’s wide-eyed hyperactive frontman antics and Ron’s sedentary scowling.
The band’s long career has seen them successfully adopt many different musical genres; including glam pop, power pop, electronic dance music, mainstream pop and most recently chamber pop. And they have enjoyed a cult following since their first releases. Sparks have been highly influential on the development of popular music, in particular on the late 1970s scene, when in collaboration with Giorgio Moroder (and Telex subsequently), they reinvented themselves as an electronic pop duo, and abandoned the traditional rock band line up.] In contrast to the esteem in which they are held by such peers as Depeche Mode, New Order, Morrissey, Mark Burgess of the Chameleons UK and They Might Be Giants, who all cite Sparks as a major influence, their almost constantly changing styles and visual presentations have sometimes seen them dismissed as a novelty act.

You know, although it's not my ultimate favourite, Indiscreet is probably the greatest testament to Sparks' genius, as it's so far-reaching musically without sacrificing the pure pop sensibility that runs through all their work. And Ron's songwriting, particularly the lyrics, are at their very best. I actually can't believe someone who's a fan could find some way to criticise it. Seriously.

Happy Hunting Ground is one of my favourite Sparks songs. It's the closest song on the album to the Kimono/Propaganda stuff and the brass instruments during the "It's fair, fair game inside" section are a lovely touch.

I like How Are You Getting Home tons more than Happy Hunting Ground but I agree with Banoony that Indiscreet finishes much more strongly than it starts. More importantly, I don't think "deserving Sparks" should ever come into it.

i don't think so. side 1 kinda shows them running out of ideas, especially on How Are You Getting Home and Happy Hunting Ground, which are lyrically hilarious but totally banal. the rest of the songs also kinda feel like they're trying too hard to be wacky, which is also a problem on Exotic Creatures of the Deep. it's still pretty damn wonderful but compared to the previous 5 albums (i'm including the halfnelson demos) it's kind of disappointing. side 2 is perfect and more than makes up for it though.
