If the wind were colors, and if the air could speak, then whistle as the wind blows. Gorgeous.

"Wendell Gee was a death dream where I was buried in a hollowed out log with this metal mesh kind of lizard skin over the top and I could hear and talk, but all of the alive people could not hear me.", Michael Stipe

This song is actually written about something.. or someone I should say. Wendell Gee lived near Athens, GA. His family name was well known.. he had a farm. One of the members from the band worked for him (I'm not sure which one). While working with him, he had discovered a lot of this about Wendell. Wendell had always been respectful to the one that worked for him... then Wendell passed away. it really is a beautiful song. and I'm glad my friend is Reid Gee. Wendell Gee's grandson, or I would have never known about this band. It's also awesome to have a famous band from less than 30 miles away from where I live.

And you are right; the banjo makes it.

I always thought Fables was hugely underrated, and this song was hugely underrated too. I still love both album and song.

Fables used to be my least fav record of theirs, now it ranks amongst my favs if not my favourite, its classic. This song gives me goosebumps, perfect ending.

I know this is considered one of the worst from one of their supposed lesser albums but i think it's a fine closer and, yes, the banjo is awesome.

I know Peter Buck doesn't like this one... but I don't agree with him.

No I don't know what it's about either! But I suspect that if I did it would lose of its charm for me. Beautiful. I gradually went off R.E.M. with each of their later albums but this was on my first and favourite --- Fables...

I love this song, though I have no clue what it is about (if it is about anything, that is). The REM FAQ talks about the Gee family who were in the used car business (and other enterprises around Athens). Still great.
