I Queensrÿche sono un gruppo Heavy Metal Statunitense formatosi a Bellevue, un sobborgo di Seattle, nel 1981. Il chitarrista Michael Wilton e il batterista Scott Rockenfield erano membri della band Cross+Fire, che suonava cover di popolari gruppi Heavy Metal come gli Iron Maiden e i Judas Priest. Dopo poco entrarono a far parte del line-up dei Cross+Fire il chitarrista Chris DeGarmo e il bassista Eddie Jackson, e la banda cambiò nome in The Mob. I The Mob, che non avevano un cantante, reclutarono Geoff Tate per cantare con loro in un Rock festival locale.
A quel tempo, Tate faceva anche parte di un altro gruppo, i Babylon. Dopo lo scioglimento dei Babylon, Tate partecipò ad alcuni spettacoli con i The Mob, ma li lasciò perché non era interessato a cantare l’ Heavy Metal.
Nel 1981 i The Mob misero insieme abbastanza fondi per registrare un demo. Ancora una volta, fu chiesto l’aiuto di Tate. Il gruppo incise quattro pezzi - Queen of the Reich, Nightrider, Blinded e The Lady Wore Black. Il gruppo sottopose il proprio demo a varie etichette e fu rifiutato da tutte. Tate era ancora convinto di rimanere nella sua band di allora, i Myth.
Su consiglio del loro nuovo manager, i The Mob cambiarono il loro nome in Queensrÿche (chiaramente ispirato al titolo del primo pezzo del loro demo). Furono la prima band ad aggiungere l’Heavy Metal umlaut alla lettera Y. Come scherzava tempo dopo Tate: “L’umlaut sulla ‘y’ ci ha ossessionato per anni. Abbiamo speso undici anni nel tentare di spiegare la sua pronuncia.”

It's not, because not all musicians care about commercial success. "Commercial" is a useful verb because it points to a number of populist stylistic cliches and production choices. I don't see how someone can refute this without repeating the "hipster hipstirn hispter hipster" mantra.

I just love the eerie, mysterious soundscape of the debut album! I find it similarly haunting to, say, Keeper I by Helloween, Dreamspace by Stratovarius, Fire of Unknown Origin by BÖC, some Grave Digger albums, and nearly anything older from Mercyful Fate/King Diamond... I love when they get this certain darkness out of the speakers if it suits the themes of the album! That said, I don't know if any newer album has this darker sound to it. I bet it's all just impersonal loudness war now. :/

Ultimately, album choices (old, new etc.) are only a matter of taste. Every album reflects the state of mind 'Ryche members had in each era. They never wanted to repeat themselves obviously.... E.g. - EP/The Warning=power metal gems. RFO = Sci-Fi prog, O:M = prog metal milestone, Empire : commercial hard rock, Promised Land : introverted melodic prog, HINTF = alternative rock, Q2K=hard rock..always progressing & changing. True, most 00's QR LP's lack a bit of character, but inspiration is hard to find in every release, especially for 50-yr+ old dudes. Give'em a break folks.. no one forces you to dig the new DtC, you can always ditch that and wait for a new LP :S :D
