  • Selections for 1972-1981

    Giu 18 2008, 3:10 di PMaz

This is my first bracket and it was hard to pick 9 songs from such a long decade. These aren't particularly my favorite. OK, actually, my #1 favorite song of all-time is in here, but I won't say which one. I have never really given consideration for any other song to unseat it either. Like others, I didn't want to pick songs that got tons of airplay, but ones that were either minor hits or obscure with some big hits mixed in. I tried ot pick one from each year, but 1980 is represented twice. Here they are. I will post a download link later.

These tend to be more rockin' affairs than what I have seen posted so far, so I hope I don't alienate myself or my song picks.

These are in order by year of release.

Couldn't I Just Tell You - I tend to like Todd's more rocking affairs, and I love the way he sings "left to hide".

The Crunge - This is probably the least known song on my favorite LZ album. It starts with that sweet bass line and ends with Robert Plant having a conversation with himself. …

  • Dungeons and Dragons

    Set 5 2006, 11:41 di innerbrat

I like to compile fan soundtracks and playlists for my geeky pursuits. Don't ask - it's just something I find distracting.

My current project is to put a soundtrack together for the 80s kids cartoon Dungeons and Dragons. And why not?

I want the following things out of my soundtrack:
    - A mix of lyriced songs and instrumentals, resulting in a cohesive soundtrack that still covers the darker elements of the series as well as the fact that, y'know, it's a kid's cartoon.
    - At least two songs for each of the six heroes. One to fit their class, and one for their personality. I'd also like one from each group to be intrumental.
    - One song to represent each of Dungeon Master, Uni, Venger, Shadow Demon and Tiamat.
    - Space filled up with miscelleny about the world they're in, the team they work within, and the quest to find their way home.

    THE CHARACTERS
    Hank: The Ranger
Appointed the leader of the small group of adventurers, Hank possessess a magic bow that fires arrows of golden light. …

    We Are the Champions

Wow. So for Christmas I got tickets to Queen + Paul Rodgers (lead singer of Bad Company). I had low expectations from what I had heard, because it was my opinion that Paul tried too hard to seperate himself from Freddie. I still think that, but either way, it was an amazing show.

We left at 6:30 to get to Worester, which is like an hour away. But there was an assload of traffic on 128, so we ended up taking an hour and a half to get there. I wanted to bring my camera…

  • Hail to Queen

    Dic 3 2005, 2:46 di pjebsen

Thanks to a colleague at work, I recently rediscovered Queen.

Listening to some of their greatest hits reminded me of what attracted me to them when I bought their vinyl albums and saw them live in the '70s: the great production (the mixing of their '70s albums still sounds terrific to me today), Brian May's unique guitar sound, Freddie Mercury's vocal stylings, and their tremendous creativity WRT tapping into various muscial genres - e.g., rockabilly (Crazy Little Thing Called Love, electronic disco (Body Language, and funk rock (Fight From The Inside and Dragon Attack).

To me, John Deacon's bass playing on 1980's "Dragon Attack" is almost as funky as Flea's contributions to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' sound. Drummer Roger Taylor did a great job as well.

1977's "Fight From the Inside" sounds similar to the groove of Rag Doll - which was released ten years later. (Parliament/Funkadelic's George Clinton once told me that he considered "Rag Doll" one…

  • Blast those "Greatest Hits" albums!

    Ago 30 2005, 22:12 di m_notley

I need to vent this, because it's been building up in me for years.

Why oh why do so many Queen fans know only the songs off the Greatest Hits albums? Looking here on last.fm I see the list of the top tracks that people listen to and right up there at the top is Bohemian Rhapsody, and underneath it for almost the entire rest of the page is nothing but singles taken off the Greatest Hits albums.

Don't get me wrong, the Greatest Hits are a good starting point for getting into any band's music, especially a band as diverse as Queen - it's how I discovered more of their music myself - but so many people and even fans don't seem to go past them.

It really bothers me when I find someone who also likes Queen (and believe me, I don't find many even though they are all out there) and ask what their favourite song or album is. I think 100% of the time the answer has been a song that was a single or Greatest Hits. "Don't you have any of their albums?" I ask. "What albums?"
