I wonder how it makes you feel when the prodigal won't come home
I wonder how it makes you feel when he'd rather be on his own
I wonder what it's like for you when a lamb has gone astray
I wonder what it's like for you when your children disobey

Hell yes, last.fm picked the original version of this. I wish I could tell last.fm to bann one version, but keep another.

I'm glad I'm sober right now, or I'd write a more scaving review of this version. It is an epic fail, will suffice. I'll take the original any day. Btw, yes, on Beat the System, they tried for a more techno sound, but it was terible as well. I like synth stuff from the 80s and way further back, but Petra just didn't make BTS sound good at all.

Who could forget "Lucas McGraw", from their debut album? It was straightforward bluegrass, a true oddity for a rock band of any sort.

Some might say they put out more than 3 P&W albums, but I'm referring to studio albums, not compilations. There was PETRA PRAISE: THE ROCK CRIES OUT, PETRA PRAISE 2: WE NEED JESUS, and REVIVAL. I might be missing one or two; I know I haven't heard EVERYTHING they've done.

Petra can only be plainly labelled as a rock band in style because they've had so many style shifts over their long career. Their first album could be labelled progressive southern rock. It had some cool harmonized leads that might remind one of the Allman Brothers. They had a goofy song on their second album COME AND JOIN US called "Holy Ghost Power", which was definitely their take on the disco scene with funky grooves and falsetto vocals like the BeeGees. Some songs, like "All Over Me", had a very jazzy feel. In the early to mid- 80's they played around with synthesizers and techno sound sampling. As John Schlitt replaced Greg X. Volz on lead vocals, the band was turning toward a pop-metal style, and some of their songs appeared on Christian metal compilations from that time. They kept that kind of style through the early 90's, evolving into a softer modern contemporay/rock sound. They put out 3 praise and worship albums of extremely varying styles that I've heard.

I really prefer the original. Star Song (and possibly others) put out several Petra compilations, since they are such a long-running and popular Christian rock band. Anything to get the cash from fans' hands. ROCK BLOCK is one of those compilations. This version is actually from an album of theirs called DOUBLE TAKE. Most of the songs on the album are complete musical rewrites of older Petra songs. Removing the trademark lead guitar part from this song was an abomination to me the first time I heard it. Actually, most of the album was a disappointment to me the first time I heard it. Really, though, the album isn't bad if you listen to it from the perspective of a Petra noob.

I'm hearing the original. And absolutely love it. Always have! I totally wore out my cassette tape on this song. One of the best.
