I arrived a couple of songs into The Wind Whistles set, having being forced to stay in work until 8pm (bah), and was instantly relaxed by their folky acoustic loveliness. Kind of like a cutesy Canadian Moldy Peaches, they matched cutting lyrics with an occasionally surprising political bent with wholesome acoustic loveliness and polls of the crowd. An easy and warming start to the evening.
Next up, for some reason I can't fathom, was the clearly should have been headlining the second hand marching band. Comparisons to Beirut are obvious, due to the prominence of the ukelele and brass in their sound, but the en masse vocals drag them away from the Continent and onto firmly Scottish territory. Extra touches like dualling glockenspiels take them away from average folky territory into something a little more alternative. The effect again is hugely warming, and at about four sounds their set was stupendously short. …
