Niet Bill Wyman, maar zijn Rhythm Kings maken de show

Duitse touringbussen, verkeersopstoppingen en amper parkeerplek. Wat is er aan de hand in Franeker? De PC? Heropening van de universiteit? Nee, een 72-jarige Brit die met zijn hobbyband de Rhythm Kings toert. Een hobbybandje, want de voormalig Rolling Stone Bill Wyman hoeft zich niet meer te bewijzen en voor de centen hoeft hij het eveneens niet te doen. Zoals hij vroeger op de achtergrond stond wanneer Mick en Keith over het podium stuiterden, staat hij nu nog steeds wat in de schaduw en komt de show vooral van zijn Rhythm Kings.

In de schaduw van Georgie Fame bijvoorbeeld. De stem van The Blue Flames, die in ’64 The Beatles van de eerste plaats schopte met het nummer yeh yeh, zingt vanachter zijn keyboard de mooiste rhythm and blues klassiekers. Of van de Grammy-award winnende Albert Lee, die faam maakte in de rockabilly en rhythm & blues. …

I have 389 Nina Simone songs in my iTunes jukebox -- and that's not even close to her entire discography -- so I think it is safe to say that she was one of the most prolific artists around. She was one of the few artists who could cover any song and make it her own, often surpassing the original. She had perhaps the most soulful voice of all-time, and you believed every word that came out of her mouth. Okay, enough gushing. Ms. Simone's music speaks for itself. Here is my list:
