  • You Made Me Realise EP (1988)

    Nov 15 2009, 21:46 di stephanklaus

You Made Me Realise (My Bloody Valentine)

An EP must be essential when 4 out of 5 tracks on it are on the band's setlist 20 years later. And one of them is their shows' finale and most notorious live number.

    http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/392575/My+Bloody+Valentine.jpg

One of the most things I like here is the vocal of Bilinda Butcher. She sings lead in the avant garde song Cigarette in Your Bed and in the catchy Drive It All Over Me, one of the catchiest tunes ever put to record and my favorite track of the EP. You Made Me Realise, the title track, is the most noisy track in this EP, followed by the dirty Slow. Thorn rounds out the whole affair with a whooshing sound. All 5 songs are completely essential to your MBV collection.

Unlike Loveless this is easily digested, and though some of the lyrics are a little disturbing it is no less thrilling or entertaining. Most bands could only dream of getting 5 songs this great on an album, let alone an EP.

  • French law thwarts My Bloody Valentine

    Lug 12 2008, 11:29 di eachman

Wed 9 Jul – My Bloody Valentine

    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3237/2655867645_e6c08edd8b.jpg

Free ear plugs - the proper inner ear kind - were given out at the door, but it didn't help the band one bit. The French promotors thought My Bloody Valentine's volume was dangerous and their sound techs adjusted accordingly. Singer/guitarist Kevin Shields apologised to the audience: 'Sorry it doesn't sound like it should...' Apparently, French law states concerts can be no louder than 106 db. MBV exceeded this limit by 9 to 19 db.

Despite the drop in volume it was still pretty damn loud. It's the loudness that makes a My Bloody Valentine concert a physical experience. The bass guitar makes your insides churn and your pants flutter while the projected back drop images disorientate. The result is a powerful drug. The sheer noise is what gives the show its character. The band members themselves add very little to it, personality wise. Vocalists Bilinda Butcher and Shields remain unfazed, singing ethereally, eyes focussed on infinity. …

  • Blur's Leisure + MBV News + Nirvana's In Utero + 1800s Sea Monster

    Lug 31 2007, 18:01 di Inertia_90

    Blur's Leisure
If you read my journal regularly, you'll know that I often take very unconventional opinions on music. Here's the latest one: Blur's 1991 debut Leisure is one of their best albums. It's fashionable to slag off the record in favor of the two that would follow (and really, few bands measure up to Blur at their mid-90's peak of Modern Life Is Rubbish and Parklife), but the truth is that Leisure is a fine record in its own right. Heady, joyous, psychedelic, it captures some sort of zeitgeist about being young. It's the only Blur record I would put on at a party or play on a road trip, because there's something in those melodies, those dated baggy drum beats and the fey Syd Barrett-esque vocals that make it perhaps the ultimate celebration of youth. This probably makes no sense at all, but it's just one of those records that always lift me up and make me want to dance.
Musically speaking, it's already accomplished. Graham Coxon's swirling art-punk guitars are here in force…

  • a 'get someone into MBV' mix

    Giu 20 2007, 4:09 di Inertia_90

My second entry on My Bloody Valentine in a row. I'm on a roll. Anyhoo, here's a gentle 16-track intro to MBV. It includes their poppier songs but hints at the noisy avant-garde side as well. Tell me what you think.

    Strawberry Wine
    Never Say Goodbye
This two tracks are from the sinfully underrated Ecstacy and Wine period. They're perhaps not as earth-shakingly awesome as the material that would follow but it's quite lovely all the same (not to mention, quite an improvement from their Dave Conway days. Eurrghh.)

    You Made Me Realise
    Slow
    Cigarette in Your Bed
These three are taken from the 1988 You Made Me Realise Ep (which I discussed in detail previously). This is when the critics stood up and took notice of the brilliant things the band were up to.

    Feed Me With Your Kiss
Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside)
    Nothing Much to Lose
Here are our representatives from the 1988 masterwork Isn't Anything. Harsh, explosive, ethereal, dreamy, and as damn near perfect as rock music has gotten, that record was MBV's masterwork. …

  • MBV: YOU MADE ME REALISE EP + 5 Songs I can't get out of my head

    Giu 13 2007, 23:18 di Inertia_90

My Bloody Valentine: You Made Me Realise EP
My Bloody Valentine is one of those bands that’s inspired some seriously bloated prose. I’ll not add my own to it, so I’ll just say without any reservations that their two full-length albums, 1988’s Isn’t Anything and 1991’s Loveless are must-owns for anyone who listens to music.
If you haven’t noticed, I’ve got a bit of a fetish for awesome singles and EP’s, and MBV did quite a few of those. While Glider and Tremolo, the two that preceded Loveless, are frequently lauded, You Made Me Realise, which was released in England three months before Isn’t Anything, is song-for-song, even better. Here’s a look at this groovy little record, song by song:
You Made Me Realise: Any idiot who insists on calling MBV a ‘dream-pop’ band ought to listen to this track and feel thoroughly ashamed for labeling the band’s music so inaccurately. This is nothing less than the sound of nuclear holocaust in the form of a three-minute pop single. …

  • Modern Life Is Rubbish + My top five bands at the moment

    Apr 27 2007, 18:47 di Inertia_90

When discussing the landmarks of rock music in the 90's, the same few albums are usually mentioned. Nevermind, OK Computer, Siamese Dream, Rage Against the Machine, and perhaps Ten are the usual suspects. Of course, all of these albums are wonderful. But what do four of them have in common? With the exception of the Radiohead album, they're all by American artists. Americans, myself included, have got a bad case of cultural imperialism. We tend to think that the only thing that happened in music during the 90's was grunge and that's simply not true.
Blur is a prime example of this. They are perhaps one of the greatest bands the 90's had to offer, and yet because their sound wasn't bog-standard grunge, America ignored them until they offered up an obligatory alt-rock single (that would be Song 2). Their best album, however, was not Blur nor was it their undeservedly fawned-over third album Parklife. Since I’ve gotten into Blur, it has become evident that their masterpiece is modern…
