Dic 31 2013, 21:42 di xynobiaSpurred on by a discussion of the Year in Metal with my friend Mathromancer, I'm reflecting back on the year in music. Bear with some navel gazing as I stare into the musical mixed bag that was 2013, as well as look forward to what 2014 has in store.
Side A: An Overview
2013 was a year of tempered steel. In spite of some major discoveries in metal, a quick look at my charts reveals some bizarre backpedaling:
The year began with lots of Billy Joel during my annual S.A.D. fest. The Stranger helped me get through the winter doldrums, although it may be a long, long time before I put on 52nd Street again. I don't know how I feel about saying that "Billy Joel got me through a long winter one time", but I might as well feel honest. Thanks, Piano Man.
Speaking of creature comforts: a rekindled affair with some old favorites, nostalgia trip or spiraling upwards? Black Sabbath was my most listened-to artist of 2013 and I haven't even heard the new album. Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, and Green Day all appeared in the Top 30. …

Lug 14 2013, 20:03 di verbcakeSome interesting stats from my iTunes. It's a little different than my last.fm page as I've had iTunes much longer (since 2001) than last.fm (since 2006). Granted I didn't put all my music on my computer until probably 2004 when I got my iPod but yeah. So without further ado here's the journal entry.
Open iTunes/iPod (or whatever) to answer the following.
Total number of tracks: 17739
Sort by song title:
-First Song: A-1 Dieselhed
-Last Song: ? Secret Chiefs 3
-Shortest Song: Aw Hell No! by my friend Nathaniel Avery, 5 seconds
-Longest Song: Delirium Cordia by Fantômas, hour 16 minutes
Sort by album:
-First Song: Abandoned Language by dälek
-Last Song: Air (Elation Mix) by MF DOOM. That doesn't really count though since I don't have the album name for that track, so hold on.
Mask by Bauhaus is the last one that I have an album listed for, everything past that either doesn't have an album listed or is a live show and the album is the live date (if that makes sense).

Gaza-No Absolutes in Human Suffering- Gaza continues to impress on their 3rd full length album. Establishing themselves as one of the true elite bands in extreme metal. Their mix of grind, sludge and hardcore meshes the three together so well that the listener forgets about the mixture and immerses themselves in the listening experience. A hard trick to pull off but Gaza are downright masterful at it and for that they deserve the highest of praise.
Pig Destroyer - Book Burner - Expectations were high for this one and those expectations were met. Pig Destroyer continue to do what they've always done, deliver a quality album that is head and shoulders above their peers. This album is a beast. It was close but Gaza was just a shade better.

Read the Bastard!
Venue, Vancouver BC July 15
By Alan Ranta
As one would expect, melvins lite wasted no time showing that they were still quite heavy. After an intro of "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath, Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantômas) droned repeating figures on his upright bass, soon joined by Dale Crover sparsely working his drum kit, and eventually the striking figure of Buzz Osborne, adding extended technique on guitar. Together, they crept slowly towards a plateau for five minutes or so. By the time they exploded, the mixed age and sex mosh core was already throwing bodies, basking in the sludge. The crowd kept it surging for the duration, as the Melvins picked up the pace and cycled through a brief history of metal, from its arena and hard rock roots, to the hardcore and grunge their band directly grew out of and developed.

Mar 1 2012, 15:56 di fabrykamagazinePrincipal Spinach – Dirty Tommy (song review) |self-released, Persistent Resistance, 2010| 5/5
If you can listen to music from a technical aspect you can usually tell if you come across trained, experienced musicians or self-taught amateurs and wannabes. In the case of the Los Angeles based band Principal Spinach both Gaelon Davis (bass, lead vocals) and Luis Briones (drums) belong to the first group of musicians because they are graduates from Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA. You can totally hear the skills they learned while listening to their well composed and unique music. Moreover, it seems the goal of Principal Spinach was to create a maverick product and in this pursuit they have achieved success.
The song "Dirty Tommy" opens the bands first studio album called Persistent Resistance which was released in 2010. A dynamic funk rock mixture found in the music brings a brainstorm of ideas thanks to its diversity. …
