Miles Dewey Davis III (Alton, 26 maggio 1926 – Santa Monica, 28 settembre 1991) è stato un compositore e trombettista statunitense, considerato uno dei piú influenti, innovativi ed originali musicisti del XX secolo.

È molto difficile disconoscere a Davis un ruolo di innovatore e genio musicale. Dotato di uno stile inconfondibile ed una incomparabile gamma espressiva, per quasi trent’anni Miles Davis è stato una figura chiave del e della musica popolare del XX secolo in generale. Dopo aver preso parte alla rivoluzione , egli fu fondatore di numerosi stili , fra cui il , l’, il ed il o . Le sue registrazioni, assieme agli spettacoli dal vivo dei numerosi gruppi guidati da lui stesso, furono fondamentali per lo sviluppo artistico del . Miles Davis fu e resta famoso sia come strumentista dalle sonorità inconfondibilmente languide e melodiche, sia per il suo atteggiamento innovatore (peraltro mai esente da critiche), sia per la sua figura di personaggio pubblico. Fu il suo un caso abbastanza raro in campo jazzistico: fu infatti uno dei pochi jazzmen in grado di realizzare anche commercialmente il proprio potenziale artistico e forse l’ultimo ad avere anche un profilo di star dell’industria musicale. Una conferma della sua poliedrica personalità artistica fu la sua (tardiva) ammissione, nel marzo 2006, alla Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; un ulteriore riconoscimento di un talento che influenzò tutti i generi di musica popolare della seconda metà del XX secolo.

    Mahavishnu Orchestra definitely. My favorite work by Miles is probably the Birth of Cool album. His be-bop/bop stuff doesn't do it for me so much, and I'm not so much for the later BB - but I should study it more. I just enjoy trad jazz over modern.

    DAVIS : "I love Pops, I love the way he sings, the way he plays -- everything he does, except when he says something against modern-jazz music. He ought to realize that he was a pioneer, too. No, he wasn't an influence of mine, and I've had very little direct contact with Pops. A long time ago, I was at Bop City, and he came in and told me he liked my playing. I don't know if he would even remember it, but I remember how good I felt to have him say it. People really dig Pops like I do myself. He does a good job overseas with his personality. But they ought to send him down South for goodwill. They need goodwill worse in Georgia and Alabama and Mississippi than they do in Europe."

    I think more atention should be payed to the real masterpieces, that are Milestones and 'Round About Midnight, not to mention Miles' last two sessions for Prestige. Those years were absolutelly stunning and Kind of Blue is only a very little part of that era.
