• Not a guitar!

Before there was the guitar there was the vihuela, smaller, slightly differently constructed. And slightly quieter. But no less beautiful to listen to.

And one of the greatest, if least well-known vihuelistas was the blind sixteenth-century musician Miguel de Fuenllana. His only published collection of music, the Libro de música para vihuela intitulado Orphenica Lyra contains a selection of music for six-course vihuela as well as pieces for four-course guitar; fantasias and songs in several European languages.

Rob MacKillop has very generously made his own fine recordings of the music of Miguel de Fuenllana freely available and I recommend a visit to his vihuela page.
