the original mix of broken english is really interesting. i'm not sure if i'll grow to prefer any of the songs to the finally released versions but the initial impression i got was that without the synths (which i love), the intricacies of the musicianship really stood out for the first time. it's not too dissimilar to what fleetwood mac were doing around the same time.

also, i can't believe i JUST found out that broken english is finally getting a deluxe reissue with a 2nd disc comprising of the original less synthy mixes of the songs and the 7" and 12" tracks from the related singles. plus the full short film by derek jarman with marianne walking around trafalgar square and playing space invaders and stuff. very excited.

i've always had a huge soft spot for "a secret life", personally. marianne's fatalistic lyrics mixed with badalamenti's noir-ish, theatrical production is beautiful, dark and immensely atmospheric. i love the "rich kid blues" album almost as much for the lo-fi country instrumentation and marianne's at-death'-door vocals. very sad, a bit painful, but beautiful.

Before The Poison, Broken English and Kissin' Time would have to be my favourite albums.. I identify so much with the punk rage and defiance of Broken English.

Horses And High Heels as she'd say herself. A lot of optimism on there... maybe Dangerous Acquaintances?

oh, here's a good one: what's marianne's happiest album? i vote for dreamin' my dreams.

  • maybemaggie

It's true about Summer Nights and Downtown (and the Shalala Song as well), but to me the others are very melancholic or like a romantic movie without a happy end. It's probably up to one's own interpretation ... interesting comparison with 90s Marianne. I had to think about it for a bit, but I suppose Video Games, Born To Die and Summertime Sadness have a similar production to "A Secret Life", very dark.

  • rainy-dog

i suppose a lot of her early songs are melancholic to an extent, but i would cite "come and stay with me", "downtown", "plaisir d'amour", "can't you hear my heartbeat", "summer nights", "i have a love" and others as examples of happy songs in both sound and subject matter. there's even a sunny bouncinees to a lot of the sad ones. if anything, lana del rey probably has more in common with 90s marianne. she's still nowhere near faithfull's level of artistry and pathos, though. maybe in time.

I find Lana Del Rey's music reminiscent of Marianne's early stuff such as This Little Bird or As Tears Go By, because she's singing about lost love and death backed by sad, melancholic melodies. That's what Marianne did in her early years. I really can't think of any happy Marianne song from the 60s. Even if the music is upbeat the lyrics will usually be the opposite.
