I think this band is critically under-appreciated.

They said in an interview that they started working on the next Album and it'll be closer to Merkur regarding the musical style. http://www.rottinghill.at/articles.php?article_id=256 It's german though.

so where in my first comment did i call rabenmorgen eclectic or "varied", to use your parlance? you also didn't touch upon my criticism of their new album being plodding, repetitive and flat-out boring. the opposite of that is not kitchen-sink eclecticism, it's good songwriting. and now you come out and say you haven't actually formed a solid opinion of it, you just wanted to be contrarian with no argument to present. tell you what, give old chamber a couple more spins, then listen to journey, der ort and merkur again and compare it against those albums. let me know how that works out.

i didn't listen to it enough to decide if it's actually that great. personally journey is my favourite. rather i was making a point about the weakness of your criticism in your previous post.

while it's true that variation for the sake of it is a gimmick, their previous 3 albums don't fall in that category so i don't really see your point. and i think you may have misread my previous post: i don't dislike the album because it's lacking a strong polka backbone and didgeridoo interludes, i dislike it because it's dull and simplistic and, for the most part, lacks any interesting riffs and melodies. not only that, it's also lacking the brutality that was present on earlier albums (Merkur included). i'm assuming by your comment that you actually enjoy this album. maybe you can enlighten me as to what you find so intriguing about it, and why you'd want to listen to it over literally any of their previous albums.

variation for the sake of variation is a superficial gimmick. it is entirely possible to achieve complete artistic coherence with basic instrumentation, constant speed and a high degree of resemblence in songwriting. people are bored by this because today randomness is regarded as a form of entertainment.

no, but really. take rabenmorgen, for example (not off der ort but whatever, it's almost identical in style to the stuff on der ort anyway, maybe a bit simpler). rabenmorgen is intricate and weaves a really gorgeous acoustic sound in with blastbeats and fairly straightforward black metal. the result is, in my opinion, one of their best songs. compare that to mary's abbey which is all strictly mid-paced and dirgy and just.. boring. there's no variation, either in tempo, instrumentation or songwriting. i think that's basically the main problem with the old chamber - they equated "primitive" with "simplistic".

they're also entirely different in sound, i dunno why some people insist on comparing them

Der Ort > The Old Chamber ; both albums are great but Der Ort's atmosphere is truly Deep and the production is kinda blacker
