Gotta say, this album really surprised me. But, I absolutely love it so far. It's different, it's weird, and it's got some interesting atmosphere.

Please re-tag Hilber to Hiber and Sub Alter to Sub Ater, they are incorrect spellings! Proof on Nuclear Blasts product page: http://www.nuclearblast.de/en/products/tontraeger/cd/cd-digi/ihsahn-das-seelenbrechen.html

I think the Heritage comparison comes from NaCl intro, there is always tin bits of Opeth in Ihsahn music, but people tend to focus too much on that aspect. Das Seelenbrechen is far more linked to Ihsahn previous works in Peccatum and TSS, and others influences like Diamanda Galas, etc ...

Even if Heritage was intended to be just a tribute, it doesn't make it less great. But I understood your point MusicSnob. That's why Ihsahn is an awesome musician, every record sounds different from the previous one (except for Anthems To The Welkin Dusk and IX Equilibrium).

""...and not just copying a particular style, like opeth did with Heritage" i don't agree. For me, they changed their style, they didn't rip off from nobody. Of course Slither is a bluesy heavy rock song, but it's obvius, that's the only 'tribute' of the album. The other songs are very original, i mean, i don't know any prog band (and i'm a huge fan of it) that made a song that could sound similar to The Devil's Orchard, or I feel the dark, for example" I never said the songs don't have originality, but even after the tons of times I've listened to it I still think it's just a bigass tribute to ELP, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull. I really don't think it's Opeth's new direction, but instead, something Mikael just really wanted to do.

But Heritage is just a 70's prog tribute, while DS is Ihsahn trying to change his sound and not just copying a particular style, like opeth did with Heritage. The comparison doesn't make sense when you're talking about sound or change of direction.

"I still think it's Leprous' "Coal" obscure brother." I was thinking that as well. Especially since Ihsahn was on Contaminate Me and they play together anyway. Both have a similar atmosphere as well.

I can't get the why people says the new album sounds like Opeth's Heritage...[3] There's almost nothing similar to Heritage. Maybe some common influences on some sections, but Das Seelenbrechen has a really dark atmosphere and it's much heavier than Heritage. I still think it's Leprous' "Coal" obscure brother. They even have songs with the "same" name (Salt and NaCl)!

I don't think people are saying it SOUNDS LIKE Heritage, but more like Opeth:Heritage::Ihsahn:Das Seelenbrechen. It's a radical change of direction/rebirth.

I can't get the why people says the new album sounds like Opeth's Heritage... i mean, i'm a big fan of both Open and Ihsahn, and Heritage has really nothing to do with Das Seelenbrechen. It's clear that Heritage aims to be a prog rock/metal album, while this one is more experimental and avant garde. I really liked this record when i listened yesterday, i think it's going to grow up on me

Das Seelenbrechen is one of the best solo albums of Ihsahn's career. As the German title states, it's a real soul breaker. Tacit 2 is pure metal Stockhausen.

OCD ALERT. WHY DOES TACIT 2 COME BEFORE TACIT. *pulls hair out* Honestly, though, I don't really know what to think of the new album. I'm the self proclaimed biggest Ihsahn fan on Earth. Individually I think I love all the songs, but together it just sounds so schizophrenic. As someone else said, a lot of the time the songs are just meandering noise. On the first listen, it's exciting because I have absolutely no idea what will happen next. I think that novelty will wear off after a few listens, though.

I love the fact that he's trying really hard to reinvent himself, being more experimental than ever, dabbling into unexplored areas such as incorporating trip-hop/drone/noise elements, but as a whole, this album really doesn't quite cut it for me. The pacing seems a little off and the transitions between different parts in the songs lack smoothness, which is especially problematic, since he seems to be keen on producing atosphere through a more mellow, repetitive approach, that may feel predictable, maybe even aimless, not really having the synergy with the techincal parts he throws in. The highs just aren't all that memorable or even too far from what he's already done, and while the "lows" aren't low enoungh to make this album bad, they still show for his inexpereince when creating outside the comfort zone of previous releases. Overall it's still a really fun album and an important step in the process of departure from his old sound into increasingly more progressive efforts.

Das Seelenbrechen is amazing. It's Opeth's Heritage for Ihsahn. I was waiting for an album like this, hence his work in Peccatum. Synths, Sax, nice solos, cool vibe... Really surprising. Maybe the second best album of the year, behind Ulver's Messe. You did it Ihsahn! You did it.

Das Seelenbrechen surprised me on the first listen, Ihsahn did something different. I can appreciate that, and I dig it for the majority of the album. There are some moments that sound like Leprous. Pulse has a really cool trip-hop/electronic vibe. The last track (See) just goes nowhere, experimentation without an ending point. But this is an album that needs more listens and I am definitely going to do that.

Hmmm, I hate to dismiss an Ihsahn album on first listen as few of them have been immediate but I can't see myself falling for this at all. A couple of the tracks in particular are just meandering noise. I've always applauded his willingness to experiment but I fear he's lost me with much of this one.

Ihsahn has obviously been working on his singing voice. That much shows in NaCL. I just hope that doesn't mean he will stop growling, or that his growls have weakened. I also hope the rest of the album is a bit heavier and that theres sax on it. He can never go wrong with dat sax.
