Well, they were absolutely fantastic. It's true, Bob was drinking liberally and even handing out beers to random people in the audience between songs. He was happy that LA seemed to be more receptive to the "new shit" than a lot of other cities. They played a lot of their most popular songs, like Game of Pricks, Teenage FBI, Cut-Out Witch, Motor Away, Exit Flagger, and about half the songs from Bee Thousand including ones I wasn't expecting at all like Ester's Day and Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory! I think my favorite moments were Wished I Was a Giant and Smothered In Hugs. I'm so fucking glad they played those two. :,)

I'm so excited I'm getting to see them on Friday! :D In order to familiarize myself with the newer stuff, I took on the challenge of making a stronger album out of standout songs on the first four post-reunion albums. Just for fun. I'm very pleased with how some of these flow into each other. Here's the list:

Saw them in Portland last night...For me the newer stuff is a hit and miss, as I'm more into punk and new wave and it seems that Bob has moved on quite a bit from that mid-90s sound into more of a classic rock and power pop vein. But they were a ton of fun live. It's still a drunken debaucherous experience that has to be witnessed. 2+ hours and 50+ songs...I sure as hell hope to have that much stamina when I'm 56. But I do miss the old sound...On my 11 hour drive down from Canada I listened to a bunch of GBV bootlegs...the shows from right around the Alien Lanes and UTBUTS period are insanely good...Bob could literally not write a single bum song...Can't wait for tonight's show in Seattle :P

I mean, Waving at Airplanes and Waking Up the Stars are nice but they just sound like straight up rip-offs of 60's/70's songs. Compare that to the greatness of Spiderfighter, Shine (Tomahawk Breath), The Quiet Game, All of This Will Go, etc. It's just disappointing.

Actually, I've been listening to post-reunion GBV, and I would say The Bears for Lunch would EASILY be the best album... if Tobin Sprout's songs weren't so weak on that one! Which is weird because on every other album, his songs are usually the strongest... Very frustrating. :/

Tobin's songs on every release since Let's Go Eat The Factory have been really really staggeringly great.

Cool Planet is good, but so far Motivational Jumpsuit stands head and shoulders over CP for this years best GBV album. Hopefully there will be one more to come, maybe two!

Their albums from the last ~2 years have been somewhat disappointing but Motivational Jumpsuit is actually really good.
