I just want to note this: "it otherwise lacked significant deviation from Extreme’s style on prior recordings." Excuse me, -what-? This album is different in so many respects the statement is beyond ridiculous. Style, tone, attitude, recording (few to no overdubs, for example) and mixing are all very different from the previous album. Every one of the four members plays differently here. The reviewers and the general fanbase got it backwards. The rest of the backcatalogue are guilty memories -- this album's the keeper.

For all the stick this album gets I think It's actually a fantastic album and blows any of the previous glam metal shite to pieces. The difference with this album is that the music still sounds fresh today whereas their earlier work is just embarassing and extremely cheesy. Kudos to the guys for having the balls to adapt and reinvent themselves, even if they were just trying to get on the coattails of the (then) popular grunge movement.

2nd best behind 3 sides. Glad it annoys the hair metal fans.

I wasn't impressed with early Extreme and never paid any further attention to them. Unfortunate! Recently I started learning guitar, and I've now just discovered Nuno's genius - Midnight Express absolutely leaves me breathless. Yes, a good test of an album's strength is time. 14 years, holy cow. I'm going to buy it!

This album is perfect in every way. Drums, guitar, vocals, production, mix, sound quality, song writing, etc.

I don't agree with BlisteringDDJ. True, their style changed on Punchline, but that was also true for Pornograffitti -> III Sides. What is Extreme supposed to sound like? My answer to this is: Nuno and Gary making blistering tunes together, and that's just what Punchline is: A great collection of blistering tunes! It is also, in my opinion, the one Extreme album that has a certain timeless quality.
