Biografia

Gli Evanescence sono un gruppo rock statunitense, formatosi nel 1998 a Little Rock (capitale dell’Arkansas).
Suonano generalmente alternative rock con influenze gotiche, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i testi, ma non tutte le canzoni seguono questo schema. La vocalist Amy Lee ha dichiarato, in una recente intervista, che il suono degli Evanescence non è da allocarsi ad un unico genere musicale, quanto ad un insieme di gothic, alternative ed epic rock con influenze a tratti metal e rap.

Parte dei fan e della critica sostiene che le canzoni della band possano essere inquadrate nel genere gothic rock, a volte metal, altri sostengono che sia puro alternative o anche post grunge. Molte di queste canzoni si concentrano sui momenti negativi della vita e su temi oscuri, come l’amore perduto, la solitudine e la morte. Il pianoforte gioca un ruolo importante nella maggior parte dei loro pezzi.

Alcuni critici hanno accusato gli Evanescence di non essere dei musicisti gothic metal ma piuttosto una band che suona pop. Amy Lee comunque non dà molta importanza a quelle che ritiene etichette, e rifiuta di categorizzare e mettere dentro uno schema definito la musica della band, credendo piuttosto che gli Evanescence abbiano “un suono unico”.

Da alcune riviste di settore sono spesso paragonati ad alcune band nu metal, ma alcuni fan trovano questa comparazione riduttiva perché si basa solamente sul loro primi due singoli, “Bring Me To Life” e “Going Under”.

    Your concept is based on a particular meaning of what is "gothic" in the music, is not just about the lyrics, and is not just "about a loud bass and distant guitar sounds". You made a particular meaning of "what is gothic", as anyone in the world. I haven't mentioned the arrangement.

    I know what is "gothic" in metal or rock, Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Doors, Lacrimosa, and others bands from 80s. Evanescence is new metal, but the lyrics are gothic, many of them deal with death and have a positive view of sorrow, and the atmosphere remember this specific style, so why not?
