Sat 18 May – Hell and Heaven Metal Fest 2013

O.k. so I've wanted an Epica shirt for ages; wanted to see Epica for ages, so six-ish hours later I am down in sydney with my friend. Neither had I seen for four years.
Fast forward to the gig where I am in high spirits and eager anticipation. Lining up down the very narrow dank alley is not particularly enlivening but we line up and wait nonetheless. At least the very gentle sporadic drops of rain do not seem to damper the mood. Entering the venue is an uncomplicated affair.
Inside it is very cosy including the stage area where we could get right up to the artists. I was about three rows from the front of the stage; close enough for my likes.
Enter the band and howls of ecstasy together.
And here my story is foreshortened. Being so close to the stage meant an uncomfortable proximity to the speakers; and believe it or not the emanating sound that enveloped and assaulted us was both very familiar, and yet grotesquely so: like writhing shadows that twisted the forms of their masters.

If you're reading this, you're probably wondering why am I writing about 2011 in January 2013. The truth is, I've been terribly busy with exams this time last year, so I kept postponing writing this article until it was so late that I actually decided to release it together with the summary of 2012.
I wrote most of the text over the year whenever I've found some time to do it, so at least it's authentic and not reminiscing of distant past.
2011 was an odd year compared to the previous three. Although the total amount of music I've listened hasn't shrunk much, it spread much wider and the result was that no band had excessive amounts of scrobbles, so even the winner would barely make top10 with such score any of the previous years. That also caused that the effect of hyping was huge as majority of the top spots were taken by bands that released new albums, played shows and an occasional newly discovered band. Stats also saw pop artists take some single wins, only confirming my genre benevolence :)
