Prima di rifarsi una vita come il più importante pianista jazz di New Orleans, Dr. John fu un chitarrista piuttosto noto con il nome Mac Rebennack (che è poi il suo vero nome), costretto a cambiare strumento da un accidentale colpo di pistola esploso contro la sua mano destra. La sua voce toccante ed i suoi virtuosismi sulla tastiera - impensabili se uno ricorda la menomazione all’arto! - ne hanno fatto una specie di supereroe dello stile di New Orleans, dove il jazz e l’r’n’b classico incontrano la psichedelia e la tradizione locale del “cajun”.

...I love that a ton of the tracks most listened to are from Gris-Gris. Normally it's all <insert single here> because people who just kinda like this or that song push the singles up really high. But here we have "Mama Roux" at 2 and "I Walk on Guilded Splinters" at 3 and "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya" at 9 and "Jump Sturdy," "Danse Kalinda Ba Doom," and "Danse Fambeaux" at 12-14! 6/7 of the album in the top 15! Craziness!
