I don't compare his new records to Ocean Machine because I don't think Ocean Machine is his best :>

Now there are more albums with Anneke than with Ché, again. Here's hoping for some balance on those stats, Casualties and Ki are good.

After hearing War Princess I wish for a collab with Dominique akin to Causalities, but heavy with Devin as supporting vocs.

Sky blue is awesome! Dark matters on the other hand is very disappointing compared to the original ZTO album.

The new Z² is great. Dev's dialoge/voice over at times sounds like cross between his usual silly self and latter-day Jack Nicholson which is rather amusing.

I haven't even really listened to Sky Blue yet. It's all about Ziltoid. Indeed.

It's not that I didn't like Sky Blue, it was just... there. Mind you, I was playing KOTOR on mute with it in the background. I'll give it a dedicated listen later. Or maybe wait for my CD to arrive. That leak doesn't sound too nice.

It's kinda unfair to compare back to Ocean Machine imo, that work is just so fucking good.

Anyone who doesn't like Sky Blue... It's a grower, that's all I have to say on that. I was immediately unimpressed with it, and that stayed true for awhile, but after a few listens I realized how brilliant SOME of the tracks are. Rain City is still kind of awful, and so is The Ones Who Love. Midnight Sun is ultimately uninteresting and useless, and A New Reign and Forever, while enjoyable, don't leave much of a mark. But the other 7 tracks are all great, imo.

Yeah that Death Of Music reference was nuts. It does have a line of Bastard in it though in the same melody. "Gone now, in a field of green" can be heard @5:56, and in Bastards @9:06. These albums have bits of all his earlier work in it, I personally love that. The solo section from Midnight Sun has an incredible Terria vibe to it and Ziltoid Goes Home feels a lot like SYL meets DTP.

Heh, It's gotta suck sometimes to have an album like OM: Biomech and then having all your new works compared to it.

Well I need to listen to Sky Blue more before I have a definite opinion on it. I don't even remember much from it, to be honest. And whoever said Rain City was like The Death Of Music a while ago has severely rustled my jimmies. Dark Matters is pretty wonderful though. I wish there was more of Dominique though, as expected she did an incredible job. I hope the To Be Continued is genuine and we get more of her next time. I look forward to checking out the non-narrated version now.

Not a huge fan of Devin Townsend's works, but Sky Line is a very interesting album. Let's see what Dark Matters has in store for us

@Scython I was worried about all the dialogues but it is great, it feels right in place. If you've read the Angry Metal Guy review don't believe half the shit the reviewer wrote: that was one of the few bad reviews on the site.

    Domenica pomeriggio
  • Jordy666sic

@Scython disc 3 has no dialogue. It's not annoying and you'll be able to enjoy the music perfectly when the dialogues kick in. It's part of the album, just like spoken passages in any other song. Disc 3 is a bonus.

  • Scython

Holding out as well as I refuse to listen to an inferior mix. Not sure if I'll like the Dark Matters disc a lot after reading how dialog is almost constantly present in every song. It's something that will no doubt be amusing and fresh at first, but gets really boring and tiresome in the long run, when you just want to listen to the music.

Z²: Dark Matters is my album of the year so far. In fact, Dark Matters is my 2nd favorite Devin Townsend album now (1st is Deconstruction). March Of The Poozers, Ziltoidian Empire and Ziltoid Goes Home are sooo good.

  • Victor_A

Dark Matters is pure genious. I may even like it more than the original Ziltoid already, since it has the same chaotic and hilarious elements from the original, at the same time as it includes new ones. However, as I've always been closer to the "serious side" of Devin's music, I personally like Sky Blue slightly better. And that is mostly due to the title track. Sky Blue (the song) just hits me hard in the feels, although both albums have many other highlights. That said, these two together make the perfect package, I'm definitely ordering my copy of Z² right away.

Z² comes out in Japan on the 22nd. We should get a final mix leaked within the next couple of days. Can't wait for my Digipak to arrive.

Yup, apparently the dialogue is much clearer on the final mix. It's unfortunate that all the leaks have been in such poor quality.

    Sabato pomeriggio
  • puto_mk

I hope this is just a problem with the mix on the leak. The dialog on Dark Matters is drowned by the rest of the music. I can't understand anything.

Take care about Jordy666sic advice!!! ;-) "Let's make sure we tag these as Z²: Sky Blue and Z²: Dark Matters (with or without the 'Z²') instead of file them all under Z². The individual artwork is too amazing to do that :) " (I will make my first listen of whole thing with Z² and then tag this albums separete)

I think Devin is taking a rest from touring and recording music after this, is he not? The man bloody well deserves it. And I have to agree with Evan, a huge appeal of Devin's music to me is the honesty of it, and you can see in interviews and from his album commentaries that each individual album is a personal statement about where his head as at at the time of writing. That's what really makes Devin's music special to me.

Here's the review of Dark Matters (from another of our writers, but also a big Devin fan). Similar thinking really, but as long as he's happy, that's the main thing. Dude needs a rest, really. http://www.themonolith.com/music/review-devin-townsend-dark-matters-z%C2%B2-disc-two/

I'm with Evan here. If after his break he decides to go further as a producer and play bass in a local Country band I'd be totally fine with that. "Is that a suggestion you’d prefer to reduce or stop performing live? Take on a more writer/director type of role? DT: I’d fucking love to. It’s not even a hint. I’d love it.[...]" This two parter interview gave has some really good insights http://tinyurl.com/l8kmtou

EvenClark, I feel the same way about Steven Wilson. He's selfish and makes music he wants to make and usually that's for the best. Devin is the same way. The most selfish musicians often are the best musicians.

    Giovedì mattina
  • EvanClark

I'm fine with whatever he wants to do. I'm okay with not liking some of his stuff, as long as it's stuff he wants to do. That's sort of the biggest appeal of Townsend for me. He does what he wants.

    Giovedì mattina
  • i4mt3hwin

Idk I kinda wish he went back to albums that don't have the ultra layered huge explosions of sound. Not everything needs to sound like a 50 layer monstrosity. Accelerated Evolution had the wall of sound production and yet it was done a very calm and emotion invoking manner.

    Giovedì mattina
  • i4mt3hwin

AMG gave it a 2.5/5. I think this comment sums up everything: "He definitely produces lots of music at a ridiculously fast pace, which has led to his sound getting sort of homogenous. I have no problem with Z2, except that it's just "a bunch more songs," and doesn't add anything relevant to his sound or catalog." The reviewer also says that any dev fan will love it so I'll probably like it anyway.
