I Def Leppard sono un gruppo heavy metal/hard rock inglese formatosi nel 1977 e diventato tra i più famosi ed influenti sulla scia della New Wave Of British Heavy Metal a cavallo tra la fine degli anni ‘70 e l’inizio degli ‘80. Ottennero un successo planetario sopratutto nel periodo dal 1983 al 1987. Esordirono con il classico metal della NWOBHM per poi spostarsi su un hair metal con marcati elementi melodici e AOR.
I Def Leppard si formarono nel 1977 (a quel tempo si chiamavano “Atomic Mass”) e i fondatori di questa formazione furono tre studenti della “Tapton School” di Sheffield: Rick Savage (basso), Pete Willis (chitarre) e Tony Kenning (batteria). Joe Elliot (amico di Willis) fece un’audizione per entrare come secondo chitarrista, ma il gruppo non rimase convinto dalla sua prestazione chitarristica. Tuttavia, ebbero modo di sentirlo cantare e la sua voce potente convinse gli altri componenti a reclutarlo come singer del gruppo.
Il loro album più famoso Hysteria, è uscito il 3 agosto 1987, caratterizzato da un suono più orecchiabile rispetto ai primi lavori e che è riuscito a vendere 18 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo, collezionando 7 super-hits che scalarano la Billboard Hot 100: Women (#80), Animal (#19), Rocket (#12), Hysteria (#10), Armageddon It (#3), Pour Some Sugar On Me (#2) e Love Bites (#1).
