• Albums of 2010! - Keeping this updated throughout the year with thoughts and reviews

    Feb 9 2010, 23:16 di hurricane_mario

I will be updating this throughout the year hopefully, so feel free to bookmark it and check back often! Keep in mind, I am rating these albums as a whole, not judging it based on the quality of particular songs. For example, if there are no songs that stand out as good, but the album is a concept album that reveals to me the meaning of life through music, it would probably be #1. And please feel free comment!

    My Favorite Albums of 2010:
    1. Royal Hunt - X
Mark Boals surprises me yet again. Towards the beginning of the album he uses growling low vocals rather than the constant high screaming we're used to, and it sounds great.
    2. Rage - Strings To A Web
How can a nearly 30 year old band sound so full and epic?
    3. Alesana - The Emptiness
I am a sucker for concept albums, and this seems to take their already good post-hardcore/screamo sound and take it even further.
    4. Crematory - Infinity
Never listened to them before but they have a decidedly epic sound. They call themselves Gothic Rock/Metal on their myspace, but this sounds more like Melodic Death/Doom, which I love.

    Honorable Mentions (Great):
Dark Tranquillity - We Are The Void
I like it, but it doesn't feel fresh and original like their previous album.
HIM - Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice
I like it, but the songs tend to bleed together as they all sound similar.

    Good:
Freedom Call - Legend of the Shadowking
Love them, but I have to be honest, this is their worst album to date, with only 2 or 3 standout tracks.
    Sigh - Scenes From Hell
I like that they are trying to expand the genre of black metal, but most of the time it comes off cheesy, like trumpets... why?
    True - Still Life
I could tell from the intro this album was going to be different. It's death metal, but there was a melodic acoustic intro more like you'd hear in power metal. Then the first track started up, and it went into a real heavy death part almost like grindcore. Just when I was about to give up and go to the next track, this acoustic flamenco-sounding guitar came in and brought a smile to my face. This genre definitely needs originality and I've found some here. Also, neat album cover...

    Decent:
    Alkaline Trio - This Addiction
After hearing the great punk title track/single, I was really excited for this album. It turned out to be a boring letdown, with the exception of the title track and "Eating Me Alive".
Blaze Bayley - Promise And Terror
Music is pretty good but very generic, and I just don't understand how people think he is anything better than a decent vocalist.
Greeley Estates - No Rain, No Rainbow
Nice heavy sound, nice title, but where's the originality here? (Hint - It isn't here, lol)
    Orden Ogan - Easton Hope
Nothing new here, but it's a very solid power metal album and worth checking out for fans of the genre. Nice riffs and the choruses have er... choruses (many vocalists), which is pretty cool. Favorite is probably "All These Dark Years".
    Troll - Neo-Satanic Supremacy
I found this album was really hard to get into... at my first skim through I hated every song. It is just so evil-sounding, foreboding, and intimidating. But I did listen to all of track 9, and it creeped into my soul a bit, and now I find I am liking the other tracks as well. I feel the best albums, in fact, are hard to get into and really "feel" at first listen. A grower album, so to speak. I can only hope this is one of them and will move up my list through the year.

    Um, No...:
    Dead Channel - Destroyer
They are a completely unknown band (703 plays on here), and for once I'd say for good reason. They just sound like they are trying sooo hard to combine hardcore, electronic sounds, and nu-metal... and it just doesn't work. I think this combination had a lot of potential, but it just wasn't pulled off well. But if the combination sounds appealing to you, definitely check them out.
    The Decaying - Binary Assault
I got this because I was wondering what "Experimental Industrial Metal" was. Now I know, and I don't like it. If you might be interested, definitely check them out because no legitimate band deserves as few listeners as 18!
Unholy Archangel - Obsessed By War
With a band name so awesome, I expected something amazing... I could not have been more wrong. After a fake sounding MIDI flute intro, you are treated to a guitar riff so raw it's hard to distinguish that it is a riff and not just someone sharpening a pencil or something. Then the drums come in, and they are so sloppy, changing tempos constantly, followed by what sounds like a cross between grindcore vocals and a bear attacking a moose. I'd only say check this out if you are on some kind of shrooms and desire a really bad trip.
    Wolfsmond - III
Very generic Black Metal. Quickly going through, really don't hear anything worthwhile here. They do have a Burzum cover from 2005 which sounds pretty good, however.

    Dark TranquillityWe Are The Void
    ==========================================
    [EN]
Although I find all DT's works well sounding, last 2 albums were blast for me. Not their longterm listener, still I always adored DT's for their true sound, fusion of melody and might. Each album brought something new, and even the things which aren't noted from the beginning tend to come up later. Each album has it's own notable tracks, which are worth listening over and over again...

...oh, yes, the We are the Void album's short review, the whole point of this entry.
First of all — album definitely bet my expectations. After being informed that this album was leaked, I struggled with my conscience for like 2.3 seconds and straight after - downloaded this album from the Internets (Bad Xin is bad). Kind of promo for me, hehe. Doesn't change a thing actually – I'm still going to support Dark Tranquillity by purchasing this album.

Not taking into account the shit quality of sound and no bonuses (it's promo after all), I have to admit that this album in plainly mindblowing. I find it a solid masterpiece, no fail tracks at all. Well-rounded and good, with more melodic influence this time I guess. No movement towards metalcore, *phew*, because it's getting quite annoying actually among other similar bands (not that I'm against metalcore, it's just let everyone do, what they do best) =)
It's quite hard to say which tracks are better, but still, I'll try in brief (everything is my own opinion, remember; you disagree – good for you ;) ):

Shadow In Our Blood is alright for a first song, I guess. Gives a right feeling straight from the beginning, melodic notes fit nicely. Although can't say, that is the best song in the album, but a decent starter song. Interesting melody in refrains nevertheless.
“We are delusional from fictional reality”

Dream Oblivion – first time heared it live, decided to preorder album straight (still, DT only takes preorders from Sweden... oh well, will have to wait more). Or is it Mikael's hypnosis, dunno. Anyways, fine track, although a bit strange. It was the first song published, and, in my opinion, it is a bit unfitting and unique track in the whole album composition. That's good, but still a strange choice for a first promo track, as I feared that band will change their sound dramatically. It didn't. Great.
“We have the upper hand, the sense on my terms, we challenge non-existence every single day”

The Fatalist. Nice feeling, chillin' piano notes in the beginning and through. Another good and well-rounded track, fits into a whole more-melodic-DT nicely. Fine lyrics, composition, but still another pass-by track for me... yeah, right)
“The day has come, you are the fatalist”

In My Absence – like musical side, like verses and chorus, like rhytm, guitar solos are fine as well. Good track overall, quite strong emotionally, from the beginning and to the end. Not much to add actually.
“I know you are out there searching tonight – I'm right here!”

The Grandest Accusation – Deep and powerful. Hello clean singing for the first time in this album. Quite catchy lyrics by the way. hmmm, I wonder about whom this song can be >_>
“What if you are a country of grief?”

At The Point Of Ignition – Second officially MySpace published track. Great track, fits into album perfectly, gives a correct feeling of the whole album. Intro is catchy and melodic, the rest is explosive and well-paced. Chorus is just great, can't add or subtract.
“What if we don't question the meaning of it all? The answer in our system, bound to kill the spark!”

Her Silent Language. Fucking. Awesome. Love It. Mixture of clean and growl vocals, love melody, love the melancholic mood, love guitar parts. 5/5, no questions, fuck you if you don't agree. One of the best tracks in this album :3
“You want to tell me something, but you do not have the words”

I Am The Void – Fast-paced, aggressive, vicious. Additional piano notes add a fine blend and surely helps this track. Nice constant change of pace in this track.
“Have you ever noticed the spaces in between? Where life ends in recession, where agony begins?”

Arkhangelsk. O-HU-EN-NO. Please, repeat that after me, it's the phrase in Russian it means mindblowing (kind of, actually x)). Epic. Deep and striking song, that makes your very soul tremble and chills your spine. I don't have enough words, maybe the description “apocalyptic” from the MySpace description is most fitting after all. Devastating, smashing, head exploding. Wow, just wow. Reminded me of the grim and dark atmosphere of Keith Thompson’s illustrations.
“To the eye of judgment now! We will stand...”

Surface The Infinite. Can't say much, another fusion of speed, melody and power. Good overall, but, surely not the best track. Hey, sadly album cannot consist of best tracks =_____= Another track that I can't tell much more about, but still, which is surely worth listening.
“Blood that seeks redemption, and endless nights of sin”

Iridium. Fucking. Awesome [2] (or is it 3?) … Mixture of vocals kicks ass. Constant change of tempo rocks. Mood of this song reminds me of Arkhangelsk a bit, although this song gives more doomish feeling, I guess. Mixture of passion and insanity. Awesome ending choice.
“Above the myriad of lights, below mantle of the stars...”

Well done, Dark Tranquillity. I wonder how can you amaze us all next time. All Hail Sweden!

P.S. Lyrics quotes are not 100% correct, I'm not a native speaker after all ^^

  • Very Metal...Very Nice Presents We Are The Void by Dark Tranquillity - - Jan.26th…

    Gen 27 2010, 3:56 di illninoese

Now I know there was at least one comment left on my first review. So there is at least one person who I know will be reading this. My goals-to-get-accomplished with this thing I’ve started just got shorter since I have one supporter.
So you must then, faithful reader, be wondering what in the blue hell is going on? Dark Tranquillity instead of Mnemic?!?!?! Damn it all man, this doesn’t make sense!! But I urge you to understand my reasoning. I have listened to the new Mnemic multiple times and I WAS going to review it on Thursday, but my CD pre-order DID come on, and 1 DAY EARLY!!!!! So I have the CD in my possession, so review #3 will be on Mnemic. It’s not that I don’t feel Mnemic is worthy of the #2 review slot, it’s just that there are few days when I can hear brand spankin’ new melodic goodness from the veterans of the genre and the world of metal. That and I have been anticipating DT’s new outing for a long time now. Longer than Mnemic’s if that is possible in my own world. But at least now I have the ability to now listen to Mnemic in CD quality, so review #3 will have that add to the audio barrage of ingeniousness that will be plowing through my ears and make me shit my pants in awe.

    Let's Get Started!

    We Are The Void
    Dark Tranquillity
    Century Media Records
    Produced by Dark Tranquillity
    2010

Id (Pre-Album): I remember the day I bought my first Dark Tranquillity CD. It was way back in the Christmas of 2005. I was in FYE and to my sheer amazement, there was a sale! And it wasn’t just some bullshit sale, it was buy 3 CD’s for $20. For those of you who can understand where I,an avid metal CD collector, is coming from this deal was too good to pass up. Especially in FYE, who overprices everything by like $6-$8 dollars. Also, if you understood where I was coming from, that means you still purchase CD’s and I tip my hat off to you. So, even though this album is “not out yet”, I will most definitely be out to pick this up the day it comes out. So it was 3 CD’s for $20 bucks ($14.99 and under); I picked out Strapping Young Lad’s Alien, Opeth’s Damnation, and Dark Tranquillity’s Character. I walked up the counter, the cashier scanned the CD’s and they all came out to regular price ($37.something was the total). I said I wasn’t going to buy them so I put them back. I didn’t have $40 bucks to spend on CD’s. Not when I could have got them for $20. I decided to scheme something. I looked around and realized that the sale was over and they had forgotten to take the one in the metal section out. I grabbed it with the CD’s I wanted, showed it to them and they sold them to me for $20 bucks. I don’t want to think about how my musical world would have been different if I wouldn’t have purchased those CD’s; especially Character. I listened to that album nonstop for about 1 month, and luck would have it that Dark Tranquillity would be opening for Opeth in March on the US Tour. In the 2 and a ½ month span that was between then and the DT/Opeth show, I learned all of Dark Tranquillity’s song that was on their setlist. I had never been more excited to see a band I had just started to like. They slayed the show (even though it was only a 25 minute set) and when they came back for Fiction, I missed out because the show in FL was 18+. You know the tour, because you probably went. The Haunted And Dark Tranquillity co-headlining with Into Eternity and Scar Symmetry in support. Fuck, shows just don’t get that good anymore. Anyways, my point is, within 3 months, Dark Tranquillity had completely changed my view in the metal world with their sound. They are now one of my all time favorite bands. I have all of their CD’s except for The Gallery and the 2 EP’s. The first time I heard The New Build, I knew I was in for something special, and oh how special it was. I, being a new-age DT fan, hold Character as the pinnacle of their illustrious career. Fiction almost lived up to it but fell short, in my honest opinion. Some of the tracks just seemed weak in the wake of one of the greatest metal albums of all time. I do believe that DT is very under rated (outside of Sweden and some parts of Europe) but I feel like if this album can build upon what Character and Fiction have created, this will be their calling card to the world. It took them 20 some odd years but they will finally earn the worldwide audience they deserve. And I hope they can do it because I have the utmost faith in them. One of the pioneers of my, arguable, favorite genre of metal, melodic death metal. There’s no way they can disappoint me because they haven’t so far, not with a single release. I am ready to enter a state of Dark Tranquillity! (Pun Intended.)

    Ego (Album):
Shadows In Our Blood – Very creepy yet catchy piano and samples intro going along with the bass and drums. I wasn’t feeling the bridge to the verse to much, but that epic ass riff made up for it with that classic DT beat along with the vocals. The solos were very nice with the keys in the back. The song sounds like a perfect blend between the style of writing the have recently been doing and what was on the first 3 CD’s.

Dream Oblivion – A very keyboard driven song, but that doesn’t stop it from making me nod my head with a dumbass grin on my face as I write this. Another awesome riff used towards the pre-chorus build up.

The Fatalist – Keys and synth have yet another profound part in the song, and it once again works perfect. I like the diversity of the vocals in the chorus. And they show us just how melody is done in the middle of the song. So far, soooooooooooo damn good

In My Absence – Nice little drum fill in the beginning that I liked a lot with the ride. Classic DT is the only way to describe this. And the solo was extremely good.

The Grandest Accusation – Very catchy synth/key opening. The beginning made me think of Terminus(Where Death Is Most Alive). The clean vocals were a surprise and very well placed. Mikael uses this unseen hidden weapon few times and to his advantage. It made the entire song memorable. The end of the song also stepped it up.

At The Point Of Ignition – The song was losing me up until the keys exited after the first 40 seconds or so. Now as the same chorus/perverse plays through, I liked the keys in the chorus. It’s very weird how one can change their mind after one listen. There’s a nice little band display in the middle of the song that displays the musical aspect of DT without the keys and vocals.

Her Silent Language – The clean vocals are brought back in this song. But they alternate with Mikael’s regular vocals and quite nicely I must say. The clean vocals are not overused and the song shows some great musicianship.
Arkhangelsk – The keys fit in perfect with the song title to me for some reason. The choiresque keys/synths and epic guitars do exactly what they are supposed to do. In my opinion, DT just showed up a lot of so called symphonic bands in just one song.

I Am The Void – For those of you who will be craving a song like Out Of Nothing, this song gives you just that. I feel like this song was intentionally put here as I sign of how the rest of the album is going to be, keys will take a seat back and lets the strings department create some atmosphere.

Surface The Infinite – And as this song kicks off, it seems that I was right. We get a very catchy melody right off the bat and BLAST BEATS!!!!!! An epic strain of key notes fit perfectly into the chorus after the coordinated chaos that is ensuing between choruses.

Iridium – Ah, as I expected. As with the end of a lot of DT albums, the nice slow beginning and key intro that marks the epic journey through the last track. As it is, the guitar melody is pretty creepy. And for some reason, as the double bass kicks in, I felt like I was listening to Bloodbath or Katatonia. And the keys are back to a creepy almost mystical sound. This music perfectly reflects the title of the song. Nice melodic music skills in the middle.

Superego (Post Album): I know the year just started but I can say this with 100% certainty, this album will be on many critics 2010 end of the year top albums lists, including mine. In the metal world it is extremely rare to find bands who put out records consistently, keep them at the caliber of the previous releases, and manage to evolve their sound even more. It is even rarer, in the aspect of musical evolution, when you know that you will always have that “group” of fans who immediately and with a fury of keystrokes chant “sellout”. Few of these bands exist, and one of them is Dark Tranquillity. Besides the occasional complaint of the use of keyboards and synths having a bigger role in DT nowadays, everyone I have come into contact that listens to DT just says they keep getting better with every record. There are no old school fans calling for a throwback to what once was. Old and new fans, like me, stand united in our views of DT. And this album just strengthens that bond even more.
Before I start ranting and raving about the new album, I will say the most important thing that I will say in this review. We Are The Void out performs Fiction in a lot of aspects (and I’m not saying that Fiction is a bad album, it’s great) but falls about 2 inches short of conquering Character. Since that’s out of the way, I can start ranting. I will say that through my initial listen, I was a bit worried in the first 30 seconds of every song except for I Am The Void and Surface The Infinite. This album is extremely laden with keys and synth intros and I, for one, don’t really consider DT to be a synth/keys driven band. Hell, even a synth/keys heavy band. But we are talking about one of the most talented group of individuals to every grace the world of metal. Every single song ended up working and had me hooked after a minute into it. Even the synth parts that I thought were out of place (like At The Point Of Ignition), I ended up liking after they were played again in the 2nd verse. DT took a HUGE leap of faith in incorporating the keys/synths as much as they did in this album, and it paid off. But of course it was going to pay off. They have slowly been adding more and more electronic layers to their music since Damage Done, and this was just the next step for them. This album has everything needed in a DT album, along with a few surprises. I found Arkhangelsk to be influenced a little by black metal with the epic symphonic notes and the lyrical content. Also the vocals added a tinge of black metal, DT style. But with this one song, I feel they have topped some of Dimmu Borgir’s and other black metal acts more recent songs. That’s a big suck it to the black metal community and hopefully they get the hint to step up there. I also always look forward to the last track on DT albums because I know it’s going to be something memorable and a perfect way to end the album. Iridium blew my expectations away and I feel that this is the best album closer that they have ever come up with. Lastly, even though long time bassist Micahel Nicklasson left about 2 years ago, the replacement DT found in Daniel Antonsson is more than a worth replacement. Seeing as how he plays in Dimension Zero, he can nail the DT style perfectly and he even adds a little more diversity into the mix. All in all, an amazing Dark Tranquillity release that SHOULD NOT BE MISSED BY ANYONE WHO CALLS THEMSELVES A FAN OF METAL. Dark Tranquillity have dropped another mesmerizing release in We Are The Void, but we expected nothing short of that. Thank you for making me love listening to metal even more now DT and see you at your headlining show in Jacksonville on the 8th of February!

Next Week On Very Metal...Very Nice Let’s try this again….The undoubted pioneers of Future Metal, Mnemic, are back with their 4th studio album Sons of the System. Mnemic is one of my favorite bands ever and I have been looking forward to this album MORE than Fear Factory's. Will it live up to my huge expectations? Will they do everything they have promised to do? Will I blindbuy the CM Distro CD pre-order or wait until I actually listen to them album?

    10. Shadows Fall - Retribution

    8. The Empire Shall Fall - Awaken

ezen az albumon gyakorlatilag minden rajta van ami csak jó lehet a metálzenében: egypár göteborgi riff, egypár atom mélyre hangolt breakdown (nyolchúros gitár ftw!), itt-ott némi matekozás meg jazzezés, valamint minden idők egyik legszenvedélyesebb énekese, Jesse David Leach. igen, ő az aki az Alive or Just Breathinget is felénekelte / üvöltötte / károgta / amit csak akarunk. hogy akkor miért csak a nyolcadik helyre rakom őket mégis? igazából van pár rész ahol teljesen oda nem illő témákat dobálnak be a számok közepébe/végére a srácok, általában amúgy pont ezek azok a részek amik igazán kihasználják a nyolcadik húr adta hangtartományt, ezekről nekem leginkább a Meshuggah neve szokott beugrani. (ha esetleg most hülyeséget mondtam volna bocsánat, amúgy nem hallgatok Meshuggát, pont ezért mert tőlük sem jött be eza túlmatekozott lehangolt mókázás.) ettől függetlenül mindenképp érdemes meghallgatni az Awaken-t, Jesse szövegei még mindig isteniek, az előadásmódja úgyszintén, a We the People meg minden szempontból az év egyik legnagyobb nótája.

    7. Scar Symmetry - Dark Matter Dimensions

    5. Killswitch Engage - Killswitch Engage (2009)

hajaj.

    4. A Day to Remember - Homesick

    1. Lamb of God - Wrath

Since the whole internet is full of useless information no one will ever care about, I now wanna add to that and post my own little meaningless stuff. However, choosing this topic probably means I can sort my memories a bit before I forget about all the things I've done in my youth (considering my rising alcohol consume, I think of that as a great idea). Maybe in some years I'll be glad I have such an important document about my past :-D
Okay, 'nuff bullshit for now. Might come back to that later^^
