Those of you saying that "even" Gorgoroth is more melodic, presumably only heard Dark Fortress' latest releases. I'd advise y'all to check out Profane Genocidal Creations/Tales From Eternal Dusk, to discover where the "melodic" tag arose from. In my mind, the "symphonic" tag is way more misplaced.

Melody is not a required component of music anymore - ever since the 20th century really when stuff like dark ambient, noise music and musique concrète began to gain traction. Hell, even some krautrock and drone (I'd be the first to say drone is music) are entirely devoid of melody. Frankly, the definition of music varies between cultures and is entirely subjective, (genres, however, are not). Take an avid noise listener, to him it's music easily because he enjoys it and it has some structure (or lack thereof) and harmonious pitch (or, yet again, lack thereof). To an avid pop fan, music has melody and noise music they probably wouldn't consider music at all. Like some people don't consider heavy metal music, and call it noise (hehe). It's definitely a conversation worth having but, then again, beluga whale noises and ocean sounds are music to some people.

"there's not music without melody" - well there is something like that. music doesn't have to have any structures. it's more a definition of music itself. For example the noise-genre. For me it's definitely some kind of music, but it's more like sounds or 'noises' - and mostly without any melody at all.

"Gorgoroth is more melodic than this" Gorgoroth and any band of the likes makes highly melody-driven music if you think carefully, some people think that adding keyboards magically makes a genre "melodic", but the truth is, there's not music without melody (at leas as far as I know), so technically any form of music is melodic in some way, now, if you're referring to that sort of black metal with lots of classic heavy metal-influenced riffs, yeah, except for their two first records, this band is far from it.

I'm new to them, starting with Venereal Dawn. It's not especially melodic black metal. Gorgoroth is more melodic than this.
