I Christian Death sono un gruppo americano nato a Los Angeles nel 1979. Il fondatore e primo frontman del gruppo è Roger Alan Painter alias Rozz Williams, nato a Pomona in California in una famiglia che tende a soffocare la sua libertà (specialmente religiosa), decide di sfogare le sue ire creando un energica band.
I Christian Death suonano infatti un Death rock molto violento con testi oltraggiosi, che trattano temi religiosi, di frustrazione interiore e di autolesionismo.
Dopo numerosi e turbolenti cambi di line-up, nel 1985 Rozz Williams esce dal gruppo. Il chitarrista Valor Kand prende le redini dei Christian Death, nonostante l’opposizione di Williams, trasformandone il sound.
Nel 1988 Williams rifonda i Christian Death reclamando il nome originale della formazione e intraprendendo un contenzioso legale con Kand.
