I Cathedral si formano nel 1989 grazie all’ex cantante del gruppo grindcore dei Napalm Death Lee Dorrian e al roadie del gruppo grindcore dei Carcass Mark Griff e a Garry ‘Gaz’ Jennings del gruppo thrash metal degli Acid Reign. Inizialmente suonano un doom metal che negli ultimi album incorpora elementi stoner rock e progressive rock.

Nel 1989 Lee Dorrian lasciò i Napalm Death perché non voleva che nel sound del gruppo ci fossero elementi death metal. I Cathedral si formarono dopo che Lee Dorrian e Mark Griffiths si incontrarono e parlarono della passione per gruppi doom metal come Candlemass, Dream Death, Pentagram, Trouble e i Witchfinder General.

I soli membri originali della line-up sono il cantante Lee Dorrian e il chitarrista Garry ‘Gaz’ Jennings.

Nell’ultimo album, The Garden of Unearthly Delights vi é stampata nel cd una mela che odora mettendo il cd nel lettore.
