I mean, no, he's not beyond criticism, but "derivative" is not the first one that comes to mind.

Mehldau is derivative? Of whom, pray tell?

cjay, what a wannabee sob..."sonic architecture of serious art" give me a break! Either the music speaks to you or it does not, no "musical foundation required" for an honest repsonce to the artist's offering. You may be selective but you are certainly not perspecatious!

Geniuses never get any recognition from the majority, the cognitive resources responsible for listening & acknowledging the sonic architecture of serious art music is hardly active in most people who have never received a strong musical foundation.

I love piano players, but this one is so derivative it beggars belief. He can play, no question, but it's all technique; triples, runs, textbook shit; play inside, play outside - how about the Kalahari Desert, that should be far enough.

He's a great soloist. I like him better with the trio, though.

Come si fa a non sbagliare un brano. Come si fa a non ripetersi mai. Come si fa a non essere mai emulatori. Genio!
