A seminar in how to write an incredibly long song and still keep people listening with the power of the words alone.

I'm not a huge fan of Blonde on Blonde, but this song is terrific! The lyrics are strange, of course, but I think there's a more intelligent & playful (or intelligently playful) sensibility at work here than on a lot of the electric era surrealism. And lest it go unmentioned, the early outtake is at least as good as the released version! Then there's Hard Rain... can't go wrong with this number, basically.

Objectively speaking the language is just excessive and random. But his voice somehow makes it work and the band carries the tune beautifully.

What can I usefully say about this song? Just exquisite, like most of his songs. But why do so few people listen to the Heretics album, the one with Jokerman and Neighbourhood Bully, which I've never heard on Last?

Beautiful. I believe he references 'On The Road' by Jack Kerouac, with the lines "Now the bricks lay on Grand Street Where the neon madmen climb. They all fall there so perfectly, It all seems so well timed." I highly recommend the book to fans of this kind of music.
