I love how it's only 3 minutes long

I think of this song as Bob's version of Jesse James. Pure myth making. For a cool film in a similar vein check out the Raoul Walsh film The Lawless Breed.

Great opener to -yet another- great (and under-appreciated!) Dylan album.

freetofu: Apparently Dylan had this track along with all the other songs that ended up on John Wesley Harding, didn't think they connected at all and ended up using this one as the album opener and also naming the record John Wesley Harding. Later he jokingly commented "I guess I did something right..." or something along those lines.

’Twas down in Chaynee County, a time they talk about. With his lady by his side, he took a stand. And soon the situation there was all but straightened out, for he was always known to lend a helping hand.

One of the best opening tracks ever, methinks. The playing is brilliant! Ken fuckin' Buttrey, such a beast.

Not a well enough recognized song. I appreciate its simplicity, has a nice flow. A very cute track.
