A throwaway from an open grave
Cut you loose from a chain gang

    Self-loathing at its most beautiful.

One of Beck's most underrated songs without any doubt.

Had I actually paid attention to this song a few years ago, my life would be very different right now.

I adored this song the very first time I heard it all those years ago. Beck's masterpiece for me.

The beginning of this song reminds me of The End, from The Doors

I think Beck mostly makes music fit for TV ads but this here piece does go deeper - with a slow haze of a wallop actually.

A lot of this song was influenced by Blind Willie Johnson's "Nobody's Fault But Mine". Beck actually pulls a lot from early blues artists like Blind Willie, Skip James, Robert Johnson. Rather than do verse for verse covers, he usually uses their work as a jumping point or as something to expand upon. Beck has always been a kind of "junk yard" musician, borrowing heavily from overlooked and lesser known sources.

Beck, once again demonstrating his tremedous versatility and range. What an amazing artist. My favorite album by this fella. I will never comprehend how he can write so many lyrics. Where do the words all arise?

Stunning track. Check youtube out for his performance of this at Reading Festival a few years back - just him and a harmonium. Simply amazing.
