A list of my favorite Canadian albums/EPs/whatever
AKA: The Joel Plaskett Appreciation List

Disclaimer: A lot of essentials are probably missing, due to my collection severely lacking in Canadian music that isn't associated with Joel Plaskett in one way or another

    1. Joel Plaskett Emergency - Down at the Khyber (2001)
I keep finding myself coming back to this time and time again. I've developed mini-obsessions with each of the songs at least once at some point in time. 5/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaLight of the Moon
    AscoltaThis Is a Message
    AscoltaTrue Patriot Love

    2. Joel Plaskett - Three (2009)
For having 27 tracks, this still seems like it's too short at times. I love the girls' presence, they both have such sweet, calming voices. The themes of the three discs are entirely relatable (to me, anyways). The first one being about departure, the second about separation and the third about returning. It all flows very nicely, yet the discs could easily stand alone by themselves.
Also epic is the appearance of 3 in everything ever that had anything to do with the album: 3 discs, 9 tracks each, the triple-word song titles, appearances in the lyrics and the album cover, the 03/24/09 release date, the $66 pre-sale price with tickets in the first 12 rows of his Massey Hall show, him being 33 1/3 (or at least claiming to be). But hey, maybe I just like numbers? 5/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaYou Let Me Down
    AscoltaNew Scotland Blues
    AscoltaBeyond, Beyond, Beyond
    AscoltaDeny, Deny, Deny
    AscoltaWishful Thinking
AscoltaAll The Way Down The Line

    3. Neil Young - After the Gold Rush (1970)
What would a Canadian list be without Neil Young?
I should probably get a few more albums of his, seeing as this is the only one I've given a good listen to. 4.5/5
    Key Tracks:
Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Don't Let It Bring You Down

    4. The Guess Who - American Woman (1970)
The title track is great, yeah, but it's not really indicative of the level of awesome the rest of the album achieves. 4.5/5
    Key Tracks:
    Ascolta8:15
    AscoltaNo Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature

    5. Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967)
The only Leonard Cohen album that really stands out to me.. but it stands out oh so much. 4.5/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaSuzanne
AscoltaHey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye

    6. Thrush Hermit - Clayton Park (1999)
Thrush Hermit Reunion Tour = happy happy happy me. I cannot wait, but I will be disappointed if the "Joel" belt buckle doesn't make a comeback. It was terribly hard to choose my favorite tracks (as you can see by half the album being listed below..) because they're all so rockin' 4.5/5
    Key Tracks:
From the Back of the Film
    Oh My Soul!
    Violent Dreams
    Before You Leave
    Western Dreamz
    Headin' South

    7. Joel Plaskett Emergency - Ashtray Rock (2007)
The soundtrack to high school. This was a bit of a grower for me, and I'll admit I hated Fashionable People when I first heard it. Gasp! 4.5/5
    Key Tracks:
    Nothing More To Say
    Penny For Your Thoughts
    Face Of The Earth

    8. Sloan - Twice Removed (1994)

    Key Tracks:
    Worried Now
    I Can Feel It
    Shame Shame

    9. Joel Plaskett Emergency - Truthfully Truthfully (2003)

    I'm not. 4.5/5
    Key Tracks:
    You Came Along
    Work Out Fine
    Mystery and Crime
    The Red Light

    10. Hawksley Workman - For Him And The Girls (1999)
Hawksley Workman reminds me a lot of somebody, but I haven't been able to figure out who it is. Maybe I'm just delusional, I don't know. But I like his sound, and there's some beautiful songs here. 4.5/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaBullets
    AscoltaDon't Be Crushed
    AscoltaNo Sissies
    AscoltaSweet Hallelujah

    11. Venetian Snares - Rossz Csillag Alatt Született (2005)

    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaSzamár Madár
    AscoltaKétsarkú Mozgalom

    11. Thrush Hermit - Sweet Homewrecker (1997)
Not quite as masterful as Clayton Park, but superb nonetheless. 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    North Dakota
    Darling Don't Worry
    On the Sneak

    13. Dave Marsh - The True Love Rules (2008)
So Dave Marsh is the drummer for Joel Plaskett Emergency, and used to play with The Super Friendz. Given that, I wasn't terribly surprised at how much this album rocks. 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaDarling You, Nothing Else Matters
    AscoltaThe Way We Live Today
    AscoltaI Know Nothing Anymore

    14. The Tragically Hip - Fully Completely (1992)
I'd feel bad if I left out the Hip 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaWheat Kings
AscoltaLooking for a Place to Happen

    15. Joel Plaskett - La De Da (2005)
Let me just slip one more Joel in here.. 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaAbsentminded Melody
    AscoltaLove This Town
    AscoltaHappen Now
    AscoltaNatural Disaster

    16. Barenaked Ladies - Gordon (1992)
Growing up, I knew Barenaked Ladies from all of their radio hits and never cared much for them. I then saw Gordon on a list of the best Canadian albums and figured I'd give them another try.
This was a completely different Barenaked Ladies than I expected. It's just an all-around fun album. 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    Grade 9
    AscoltaBe My Yoko Ono

    17. Local Rabbits - This Is It Here We Go (2002)
    4/5

    Never Had To Fight
    Poured All That I Got
    Purple & Grey

    18. The Tea Party - The Edges of Twilight (1995)
I'll admit, the only reason I ever got this album because I noticed the band was from the city I grew up near. I was quite pleasantly surprised. 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    Fire in the Head
    Walk With Me
    The Bazaar

    19. Mare - Mare (2004)
    Sludge-y sludge from Toronto. 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    Tropics

    20. Mary Margaret O'Hara - Miss America (1988)
Catharine O'Hara's less-famous sister (you know, the one from SCTV and Home Alone? Yeah, her).
This album is so very pretty. From start to end. It can be a bit strange at times, but she's a great singer. 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    Anew Day
    You Will Be Loved Again
    Help Me Lift You Up

    21. Raine Maida - The Hunter's Lullaby (2007)
I like this.. I don't exactly know why, but I like this. It's much different than OLP, in a good way (but then again, different from OLP tends to be a good thing, in general) 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaYellow Brick Road
    AscoltaCareful What You Wish For

    22. Teenage Head - Teenage Head (1979)
This album is terribly fun. Pop-y with a bit of punk. 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaPicture My Face
    AscoltaYou're Tearin' Me Apart

    23. The Super Friendz - Mock Up, Scale Down (1995)

    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaNew Age
    AscoltaThe Prisoner

    25. Our Lady Peace - Happiness... Is Not a Fish That You Can Catch (1999)
I used to like OLP a whole bunch, and admired Raine's unique vocals.. now they're borderline annoying. However, this is the only album that's stuck with me even a little and, well, it's not bad so I'm gonna include it, okay? Okay. 4/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaThief
    AscoltaAnnie
    AscoltaOne Man Army

    26. The Pursuit of Happiness - Love Junk (1988)
This album has definite highs and lows. But I think the highs warrant a spot on this here list. 3.5/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaI'm an Adult Now
    AscoltaHard To Laugh
    AscoltaShe's So Young

    27. Les Breastfeeders - Les matins de grands soirs (2006)
I find this very strange.. in a good way. 3.5/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaChanson pour Destinée
    AscoltaEt j'apprendrai que c'est l'hiver

    28. Protest the Hero - Kezia (2006)
Though I like this album, I find PTH to be majorly over-hyped. Maybe there's just something I don't get. Whatever. 3.5/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaHeretics & Killers
    AscoltaBury The Hatchet

    29. Strapping Young Lad - City (1997)
I haven't listened to this in a good while, but I do remember liking it, and from what I recall I liked these tracks. Maybe. I can't check due to my hard drive killing itself and me losing all that I hold dear (ie: musics) 3.5/5
    Key Tracks:
    AscoltaAAA
    AscoltaUnderneath The Waves

  • Charts of 2009!

    Gen 7 2010, 2:17 di bluejuh

According to my scrobble counts, here are my top 10 artists, albums and songs for 2009:

    Artists:

    1. They Might Be Giants
    2. Old 97's
    3. Rhett Miller
    4. Eels
    5. Mike Doughty
    6. The Lonely Island
    7. Barenaked Ladies
    8. The Cardigans
    9. Guster
    10. Supergrass
    10. Bis

It seems unfair to me, somehow, to rank Rhett Miller's solo act apart from Old 97's. In my head at least, they seem to roll-up into one big pile of awesome, so (to be courteous to the other acts) they should be merged into a single line. Fortunately, a tie for 10th evens things out a bit.

Nothing else really interesting to state here, this is pretty much the same list o' top bands I've had since high school. The only newcomers are Doughty, who I've only really started listening to in the last couple years, and The Lonely Island, who only officially released an album this February.

    Albums:

    1. Incredibad, The Lonely Island
    2. The Instigator, Rhett Miller
    3. It's Not Me, It's You, Lily Allen
    4. The Believer, Rhett Miller
    5. Fight Songs, Old 97's
    6. Too Far To Care, Old 97's
    7. Rhett Miller, Rhett Miller
    8. Mark Ronson presents Rhymefest: MAN IN THE MIRROR, Rhymefest
    9. Satellite Rides, Old 97's
    10. Strange Bird EP, Natalie Warner

Remember what I said about Rhett Miller's big fat pile of awesome? Two-fifths of my top ten list was written by him, including his new self-titled record. It was Incredibad, though, that rocked my freaking jeans off this year. I'm so happy this album exists. I was also pretty surprised how much I liked Rhymefest and his Michael Jackson tribute album.

The real winner of this list? Natalie Warner, who's 5-track EP outscrobbled all but 9 of the full-length releases in my collection. Seriously guys, you need to own this EP. Buy it. Now.

    Tracks:

    Here's the top 5:
    1. Santana DVX (feat. E-40), The Lonely Island
    2. Strange Bird, Natalie Warner
    2. Love Killer, Natalie Warner
    2. AscoltaCome Around, Rhett Miller
    5. Point Shirley, Rhett Miller

    Lessons learned here:
    - Andy, Jorma and Kiv of The Lonely Island are the greatest fake MC's on Earth.
    - Why haven't you bought Strange Bird EP yet? What's wrong with you?
    - Rhett Miller tracks rock a hell of a lot. Even 8-year-old Rhett Miller tracks.

As for why I didn't put down the full top 10? A massive tie for 10th place made that pretty messy looking:

    6. United State of Pop, DJ Earworm
    6. AscoltaVanished, Crystal Castles
    6. Just Like California, Old 97's
    6. AscoltaAin't That Strange, Rhett Miller
    10. AscoltaMelanie Davis, Supergrass
    10. AscoltaDemons, Guster
    10. Sentimental Heart, She & Him
    10. Four Leaf Clover, Old 97's
    10. Barrier Reef, Old 97's
    10. Terrible Vision, Rhett Miller
    10. Last This Time, Natalie Warner
    10. AscoltaAirport Song, Guster
    10. AscoltaI Need Some Fine Wine And You, You Need To Be Nicer, The Cardigans
    10. I Will Take You Under, Natalie Warner
    10. Fireflies (feat. Rachael Yamagata), Rhett Miller
    10. Boombox (feat. Julian Casablancas), The Lonely Island
    10. AscoltaAt The Wig Store, Logan Whitehurst & the Junior Science Club
