Charles Arthur Russell, Jr. (May 21, 1951 – April 4, 1992) was an American cellist, composer, singer, and disco artist. While he found the most success in dance music, Russell’s career bridged New York’s downtown, rock, and dance music scenes; his collaborators ranged from Philip Glass to David Byrne to Nicky Siano.
Russell died of AIDS at the age of 40. In an April 28 column, Kyle Gann of The Village Voice wrote: “His recent performances had been so infrequent due to illness, his songs were so personal, that it seems as though he simply vanished into his music.”

I remember Mickey Mouse. And Arthur Russell. I was working for a while on an event in Disneyland Paris. Between shifts Mickey would be slouched, backstage, in the seat of a forklift. He kept his suit on but took the bulky headpiece off, chain-smoking 'Gauloises' cigarettes. The mask, in that hot French summer, irritated his skin - he had an angry case of acne. Which explains, to this day, why Mickey Mouse always reminds me of Arthur Russell.
