Any 311 fans (who smoke and I know a good amount of you do) had a good 420 Day? :P

311 is awesome and all, but I hate the 3 albums before Stereolithic. Don't Tread On Me is pure garbage and it's the worst 311 album, in my opinion. Uplifter is a downer and it's boring as fuck. That didn't lift my spirits or anything, it is garbage. Universal Pulse is not good at all and just as boring as Uplifter. Stereolithic is awesome, because Scotch is the producer. I blasted it out of my car yesterday. It is one solid record.

stereolithic would be so much better if the whole band didn't sound like they wanted to kill themselves on almost every song

"Not for lack of a gentle mother, I do lack a mental cover It keeps on pounding my head, world order, water Torture, exhausted economics, everyday just more comics In a pissing contest that started out with atomic bombs Mom, will they drop the bomb? Will they think about their children's children Being born with limbs missing? There is no one to call, you can't make 'em stall I wanna feed 'em to each other 'cause I'm sick of 'em all How can't you see something's missing Is anyone listening We're shooting up flares Does anyone care They got this world locked down, bound and gagged From the Rez in Pine Ridge to that land in Baghdad When did our leaders Become bottom feeders We're shooting up flares Does anyone care" What a bunch of fluffy unicorns and idealist nonsense.

As a lifelong MD resident who got to see JCS before they had any MTV play, I can tell you that the reason JCS never blew-up like 311 is because as soon as they received mainstream airplay, Jimi started writing the most boring, mainstream drivel possible. In addition, he became a major dick and alienated the other legitimate musicians in the band. 311 blew-up and released Transistor, the opposite of Bring Your Own Stereo. You may like JCS and 3rd Eye more, but your preference alone does not seriously call into question the authenticity of the popularity of 311. You are also not familiar enough with their catalog if you think it is full of rainbows and ice cream. Even their softest sounding album, Don't Tread on Me, featured aggressive lyrical content.

"The UNITY and POSITIVITY-platform is quite naive because nobody wakes up everyday and just SMILES with beaming SUNSHINE nor do they piss-RAINBOWS nor do they shit-ICE CREAM" -Indeed. This is why I've come to appreciate the angry-assertive Nick persona found on such tracks as Silver, DLMD and Don't Tread on Me, just to name a few. I'd kinda like to see more of that Nick, slightly less of the dork dancing around in my avatar. And don't get me wrong, I love that dork! It's just nice when you see, yeah, kitty's got claws. I'm also a fan of the angry-assertive SA found on Salsa, Galaxy, Solar Flare, et cetera.

They're a fairly good enough band but if they didn't make as much money as they do, I kind of wonder if they would still be here, that's all. I'll happily listen to my Third Eye Blind (a true "California" band), The Urge, Jimmie's Chicken Shack...

I have their new album and I haven't listened to it yet. I really didn't like their Don't Tread On Me album that much. Their best albums (in my opinion) are Grassroots, Transistor, Soundsystem, From Chaos and Evolver. Those are all incredible albums. I will get to scrobbling at some point in the future. Perhaps I will in the near future. Who knows. I'm more into metal, you will definitely find me scrobble more metal than 311. I would like to listen to a 311 album where they experiment with metal more. That would be quite awesome. I dunno if they will ever pull that off. Since they lack an "aggressive edge", I doubt they'll ever experiment with metal ever. 311 creates music you're able to chill out to and stuff. That's pretty much their forte. They excel at composing and recording those types of songs. Amber is an excellent example. I'll Be Here Awhile is another excellent example. They're very excellent songs to chill out to. I should scrobble those songs pretty soon.

Where the 3 bands I just mentioned CAN... quite effortlessly... they're slicker song-writers and Jimi, Dicky & Steve Ewing all are much more attention-grabbing to me as frontmen. There's nothing "wrong" with 311's music but there's much more RIGHT with those other artists' stuff and I NEVER get tired of them... EVER. With 311 I listened to all of those songs and now just find the material stagnant. I don't understand why they have this CULT following... I did 311 Day in New Orleans this year and I wasn't that impressed... Just because it's 311 Day... why can't there be an OPENING ACT? People were so excited and then we were all bored about 10 songs in... just being honest. The UNITY and POSITIVITY-platform is quite naive because nobody wakes up everyday and just SMILES with beaming SUNSHINE nor do they piss-RAINBOWS nor do they shit-ICE CREAM... you get the picture. FLUFF is the term.... and I BELIEVE it is the most APPROPRIATE for them

  • Zach216

I enjoyed their music for a few years... Transistor being my favorite album really gave an absurd amount of plays for them... but now... I just think of it as fluff... (entertainment or writing perceived as trivial or superficial.) the change of heart came from a lack of musical growth on their last couple records along with the discovery of 3 other artists that I find much more stimulating, engrossing and just authentic. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Urge & Jimmie's Chicken Shack are all vastly superior bands, in my opinion. (and they always have been...) SA's still got some 'sparkle & effervescence" but after initially finding Nick Hexum appealing in this "All-American"/Cool-Popular-Guy Sort of Way... I've actually been very unimpressed with his ability (or lack-thereof) to perform his OWN songs, live. Some of his vocal performances... were just completely mediocre to me. What 311 lacks is an aggressive edge... that ability to ATTACK on occasion. ..They just can't pull that off...

And any person who listens to A$AP Rocky so much...especially given that he tried to steal the thunder of the incomparable Aesop Rock (who was around WAAAY before), has no business talking about substance.

"Substance" (like everything) is a relative-term. Love it or hate it, I actually think the 311 sound is pretty distinctive... instantly identifiable/recognizable. They're extremely solid musicians and really great guys, I mean there are dozens of bands I would berate before 311...they've never "sold out" (or changed with the times... they've stayed on their own course) and never changed their message (unity/positivity) EVER. If nothing else they're a respectable band with a pretty good live show

Even after two 3/11 days and a bunch of other summer concerts over the years, I was going to give up on 311 if Stereolithic disappointed. They turned it around and made their best product since From Chaos.

You can (over time) certainly have a "change of heart" (to some extent) that doesn't make you stupid... it makes you a human being with a brain. As long as you can articulate your opinion then there's no way that you're "wrong" or "dumb"... My feeling is that between Uplifter and Universal Pulse the band did... I don't know I have 24 songs with Bob Rock. Especially on the last record (where they only completed & released 8 songs; which still is very odd) I think they made a couple 'nice' records (I know Bob ALWAYS gives his input...) but I just think it's time to go back to their "old" style and up the playing & musicianship side of things once again. Still one of my favorite bands... at least I'm familiar enough with ALL of their albums to form an opinion. Freedom of speech allows me to feel one way & then amend/alter what I said. I think it actually takes a BIG person to do that... :-)
