Andre Akinyele Releases New CD – The Potomac Syndrome (Pop/Rock/Urban/R&B)

Washington, DC – Multi-instrumentalist Andre Akinyele, known for his work as the bandleader and bassist for the jazz funk fusion band Gemini Soul, announced the release of his new album The Potomac Syndrome. The Potomac Syndrome was released on January 9, 2012 and is now available at Amazon, CDBABY, iTunes, and other major online retailers.

The Potomac Syndrome, Andre Akinyele's first album under that name on the Bombay Recording Company label, is a mixture of many musical genres. From alternative pop/rock tunes to urban /r&b grooves in the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Meshell Ndegeocello, Rahsaan Patterson, Janelle Monae, etc.; The Potomac Syndrome offers something for everyone.

The Potomac Syndrome is an eclectic album; self-produced, it features 13 tracks and is the latest addition to Andre’s assorted catalog. The album opens with the title track “The Potomac Syndrome,” a funk/rock inspired tune reminiscent of early Lenny Kravitz. However, tracks like “DC Love (You Know It),” “Help Me,” “Georgetown,” and “Love Me” ignites Andre’s passion for love. “Love Me” is a song indicative of early Prince and the Minneapolis Sound. In contrast, songs like “Run To,” “Nebula,” “Tip of My Tongue,” and “PaceMaker” show Andre experimenting with technology and various synths suggestive of the early 80s. Overall, The Potomac Syndrome is one of those albums where if it were an LP, any place the needle drops the music grabs you.

Andre Marcel Ajamu Akinyele (Ah-jah-moo + Ah-kin-yay-lay) was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area, but relocated to the Washington, DC area in 2009. He has recorded under many names and has released a dozen albums in many genres. Among those names was Marcel from 1998 to 2004 which garnered him independent success with several releases throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan with styles ranging from Funk to World.

As Ajamu Akinyele (name change in 2004 meaning "Strong Warrior" in the Yoruba language of Nigeria, Africa), he embarked on his first jazz CD titled "Supernova" in 2005. However, the following year, the world witnessed just how far he would go when he released the double CD "Black Magic The Cyber Jazz Experience," which established him as a true contender in the jazz industry.

As the bandleader, bassist, and founder of the jazz funk fusion band Gemini Soul, from 2005 to 2009, he and recording artist Jon O’Bergh collaborated in producing and releasing five CD’s, which fused smooth jazz and funk for a new generation.

Now, as Andre Akinyele, he is ready to move ahead and try his latest effort “The Potomac Syndrome,” which is a departure from previous styles. The Potomac Syndrome is just another avenue for him to explore his muse.

The Potomac Syndrome - Production Notes: Written, produced, arranged, composed and performed by Andre Akinyele. Recorded and Mixed at Willie Pearl Studios; Washington, DC.
