Hey, I know! Those of you who are still in school should draw some doodles or comic strips around the text, and later argue that you thought it was a drawing contest instead of a [math] test, since there was a comic sans font.

  • It's because its easier to read that other fonts for dyslexic kids. Its sans serif and all the letters are different shapes (more different than usual, don't get smart).

Despite that it's pretty f*cking ugly.

Right up there with the pigeons and rats...
  • Every single Geography worksheet is in Comic Sans at my school, and they also have a really dodgy clip art smiley globe in the corner; the epitome of cheese!

  • I've argued with teachers over this subject, they had to concede :]
but I think everyone's missing another very important point, what about justification!? (or is that just me?)

In the beginning the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move. - (The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe)

Teachers aren't familiar with the concept of justification. Or they just lack any sense for what is looking neat. But why should we expect a history teacher in secondary school to be familiar with rules of typography?
Interesting thing is, that male teachers don't fall into these traps most of the time, because they simply 'outsource' such tasks to the students, who are somewhat better with these things.

  • There is a much better font called Sassoon Primary http://www.linotype.com/50064/sassoonprimarybylinotype-family.html?gclid=CMfFxaXs_ZkCFYKB3godWTrBFQ, designed by Rosemary Sassoon, a handwriting teacher. It has all the qualities that can help very young learners. Comic Sans is not a children's font at all - it is for COMIC STRIPS - mostly read by adolescents and adults. It has things in it that are not good for learners. I was a teacher for 18 years and I have helped to teach teachers. Most teachers are unaware of how silly their use of Comic Sans is. If Microsoft wasn't the global monopolistic pariah that it is it would pay for Sassoon Primary (or alternative learner fonts) to be freely available to all who use its wretched products.

Even worse than using Comic Sans is using Comic Sans plus WordArt (ugh) with a rainbow effect (please kill me now) and distorted characters (why?) and three other fonts in the same document. This should be a punishable offence in all jurisdictions.

Badly matched clip art is another teacher weakness.

  • I think that's a middle/high school teacher thing.

I have to see comic sans in every single Biology and Maths exam! Also, my whole class uses it for their Power Point or Word projects.

And yes, justification have to be used ALWAYS, please!
