The pinnacle of all shoegaze albums is On Fire by Galaxie 500.

    Souvlaki
    Isn't Anything
    Loveless
    Nowhere
    Raise
    Split
Psychocandy (although not technically shoegaze, it's a good contributor to the genre and later works)

Other stuff almost on the list is Chapterhouse and Pale Saints. Also A Place To Bury Strangers (they give me hope for the new shoegaze!)

After you've got your Slowdive, MBV, Chapterhouse and Ride under your belt, you might want to have a look at the following:

The underrated Ichabod & I, or failing that Everything's Alright Forever tend to get overlooked because of what the band did later, which is a shame.

I think The House Of Love's first album, on Creation, is an underrated shoegaze classic. It's been reissued as 1986-88: The Creation Recordings, the first 10 tracks are from the album in question.

I should also mention Moose here, although I was never a big fan, many people considered them to be the archetypal shoegaze band, before Slowdive's more dreamy brand of shoegaze took centre stage. Something seems to be up with the Moose page on Last.fm, as the tracks appear to be by a totally different band, but the videos appear to be ok. http://www.last.fm/music/Moose/+videos/+1-9VewHeOXqu0

Finally, Scar by Lush. Always a winner, and has been reissued in various forms and formats.

Nothing of Lush comes anywhere near Split for my sake. It is nice though. I don't know why I haven't checked out those others yet. Probably didn't find it to download anywhere (and been too lazy to see if i could find it to buy).

I think ''Deathconciousnes'' by Have a Nice Life is the best shoegaze album in 2008 !!!!!!

Strange that there's no Swervedriver album in here. I can't say which album is a must have but the whole band is great.

  • Glad someone posted Slowdive, absolutely fantastic stuff. Souvlaki (and of course Loveless) are my favourite shoegaze albums anyway
