Just bought FLAC directly from Cool! Saved me from buying the CD only to toss it in a box after I ripped it.

I'll have a look at opus to use it with my mobile players, sounds interesting...

I'm not saying you must save 85% storage by switching to Opus, but that Vorbis is pretty obsolete by now. Why'd you use Vorbis, cholero?

The Opus Interactive Audio Codec is definitely more accurate than q5.0 Vorbis, and i could not distinguish it from FLAC using the ABX plugin of Foobar2000.

I've ripped all my CD's again in 2010; to flac. From 2002-2008 I did the same to ogg vorbis q5. But now I can relax and enjoy. I never opened the Box of my ~1000 CD's again, it is in the pavement since I moved to our new apartment 2 years ago. So I recommend to everyone thinking of ripping his/her CD collection: rip it to flac not to a lossy format. Otherwise you will always think: It could sound slightly better :-(

"the more capable the system is at reproducing accurate music the more you will hear the compression" That's the point, meyersnole !! The people who listen to their music through plastic PC speakers, directly from the cheap soundcard will never hear the difference between 320kb/s MP3 and a FLAC file.... Fact is: the better your equipment is the better the sound files have to be! And I never had better soundfiles than my FLAC files

I also agree that FLAC is a great archival medium. Since it is lossless, you can convert from FLAC to another format with corruption. Going from one compressed format, to another, then another can significantly change the file.

@ktmf I disagree that it is a placebo effect. Not sure what you mean by decent sound system, but the more capable the system is at reproducing accurate music the more you will hear the compression. And once you start listening for it, the more it annoys you (generally). However, I would tend to agree that on most equipment, with most masterings (a lot of music is messed up during production) you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a FLAC and 320 mp3. I do not have much experience with ogg files, but would be surprised if something compressed down to 96kbps was indiscernible from the original. I would believe that without headphones or large monitors at volume you could fool some people.

I almost don't look for an album if there's not in FLAC!

@ZombiePsyche: what you are hearing is called placebo-effect. Really, I use a decent soundsystem and am trained into hearing compression artifacts, and usually can't even hear the difference between 96kbps Vorbis and FLAC. Did you ever tried using an ABX-test to 'prove' your claims? I really am not deaf, for the record.

I did a comparison of 160 vs. 320 vs. FLAC & if you have even a decent sound system, the difference is larger than night & day. You must be deaf if you can't tell a difference between 320 vs. FLAC, let alone 160 vs. 320.

"Because I find the difference between 160 and 320 to be very noticeable most of the time." As do I. I tend to use quality audio devices though.

"Most people won't even hear the difference between a ~160kbps MP3 / AAC and the losless file." Really. Because I find the difference between 160 and 320 to be very noticeable most of the time. Maybe people have untrained ears, maybe people have ipods...
